Cowboys End Season With 72-5- 4 Win Over Parowan, The Kanab Cowboys ended their regular league season on a good note by shearing the Parowan Rams on the home court last Wednesday, 72-5It was the last league game for the Pokes prior to the Region Round Robin which will begin this weekend at Beaver. They did play Virgin Valley at Mesquite, Nevada on Tuesday evening (too late for our press time). In the encounter with Parowan Kanab led throughout the game, but it was not always a foregone conclusion that they would win by a big margin. At one point to begin the third period the Rams pulled to within four points before Kanab pushed ahead. At the end of the first period 0 on the strength of Kanab led three baskets by Rick Lamb and four of four from the foul line by Klint Glover. After eight more lead minutes Kanab had a 32-2- 6 which they took to the dressing room. Region play will begin Friday afternoon in Beaver and Kanab will find themselves matched against Wayne playing at 4:30 p.m. In the other games for the opening day of the Round Robin, Panguitch and Wasatch Academy will lead off the day at 10:30 a.m. followed by Beaver and Escalante at 12:15 p.m. Then Valley and Gunnison will square off at 2 p.m., followed by Kanab and Wayne. North Sevier will face Parowan at 6:15 in the evening session followed by Milford and Bryce Valley at 8 p.m. The winner of the Kanab-Wayn- e game will play the winner of the North Sevier-Parowa-n contest The winner of the war will meet the Valley-Gunnis- c winner of the game. Enterprise and Piute will draw byes on the first day. They both enter as first place teams. The final standings in the two divisions are as follows: In Division I, Piute, Valley, North Sevier, Panguitch, Bryce Valley, Escalante and Wayne. F. F. "Blackie" Janes, and Ted Athcrley received the distinction of the honorary membership. This because of the many efforts they have expended in behalf of Kanab's youth and athletics. Under the direction of Blackie and Ted the first little league baseball field was built They both have spent many years coaching youth teams as well as officiating various games. They also were instrumental in implementing the first little league basketball in which they also coached and officiated. "These two men have always been there to help with community and church athletics," said Orton the honorary when presenting status. 'Ted also organized the annual football steak fry which follows the football season." In the past four other individuals have received the honorary membership status. They include: H. Bcmell Lewis, Thomas Lawson, Ernest Kirby and Duff Pugh. These four with the two new nembers e received a pass to all home Activities of the Kanab High School. Ladd Bunting was the recipient fo a $500 prize for some sharp shooting at halftime of one of the games. "It was as close a tournament as I've ever seen," commented Valley Coach Ferril Heaton. "Each of the five teams that is going to state won its place in a one point game, and any one of the five could easily go on to win state." In Thursdays game. Valley easily defeated its first opponent, Parowan, 61 to 25. But they were not allowed to coast along on mat Friday's game against victory. North Sevier was a contest between evenly matched teams, with Valley coming out on top, 42 to 41. The championship game Saturday pitied Valley against Panguitch in another close game. Valley fought hard to gel ahead of the to Bobcats but was stay even. At the end of the game the Buffaloes pulled within one point of Panguitch with seconds to go and possession of the ball. They got off that last shot that could hard-foug- hard-press- ht have won the game but failed to make it sink. This gave Panguitch the championship and Valley second place with the final score 39 to 38. The five teams from Region 12 that will participate at stale include Panguitch, Valley, Piute, North Sevier, and Enterprise. By virtue of theif first and second positions, Panguitch and Valley had byes yesterday and will play their first games today. Valley girls chosen to the team were Karla Heyborne and Jolene Lamb. Then for the half court shot he received $500. Ron Englestead will present the check to Ladd this week. Ladd was called from the fans because he had the right number on his program. Several others were given the chance at the big money. Ladd will be leaving soon to fill an LDS mission in Korea.
