Show V SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS - Thursday, January 9, 1888 - Page Three Garkane Update On Bonanza Power Plant An agreement has been reached by Deseret G&T and General Electric Credit Corporation to leverage lease the new Bonanza Plant. Shell Oil Company will purchase the plant for $650 million and lease the plant back to Deseret on a 25 year lease with a 10 year option. The transaction will save DG&T"s members $28 million a year and reduce future rate increases by an estimated The sale includes only the plant site itself. The railroad, transmission lines, coal, and pumping facilities are not 15. included. Before the leverage lease could be pursued it was necessary for Deseret to secure firm power contracts. DECEMBER Many holiday activities and Elections, snow, more state athletic champs and awards came to us in this month of Thanksgiving. Paul Jenkins retained his post as Kanab mayor with three , new councilmen elected, their terms to begin with the new year; Dan Bartlett, Ray Clark and Mark Corry. The area received over ten inches of snow the second week of November, much of which stayed with us for some time. Occasional lighter snows followed, making for a pretty, wintery greeting, though some power outages were caused and many tree limbs broken. Kanab's Cowboys captured the football crown satisfyingly state defeating rival Beaver 42-- at Rice Stadium in Salt Lake City. Awards included many driving safety awards to Kaibo truckers and recognition by the district school board to Karen Munson for her special free enterprise class at the middle school. Also honored was Fredonias fair booth at the Arizona State Fair, with a second, fourth and an eighth place in varying categories. Mickie Kropf was thanked by the post office for her work in establishing official addresses' for the Kanab area. Kane County Travel Council and commissioners paid special tribute to Debbie Judd for her organization and efforts for the Desert Vagabond Days" in Close-U- . came to an agreement on the management of the hospital. Vandalism of television equipment resulted in restriction of the roads to the towers; come on, whoever, its our money, AND yours, which your antics cost us. Youth City Council from KKS was named and recognized, beginning to attend city council meetings with plans to conduct one soon. Steve Newell is' mayor with council members Keri Overstreet, Andy Compas, Diane Spencer, Rosanna Witzke and Jeff Mosdell. Academic decathlon teams from the high schools are being prepared for their competitions this spring. Special recognition was paid the state champion volleyball team from Valley for their high academic rating of 3.7 team GPA. Big honors came to the county and the community of Alton with Karl Heaton being named Utah State Cattleman of the Year. Fredonia's Centennial Celebrations came to a close with a Christmas Lighting Contest and presentation of the original musical The Bloomin' Desert, based on the history of the settlement of the area. The annual Cowboy n, happy to be able to side, U.M.P.A., a group of six municipalities in central Utah, is buying a 15 megawatt interest in Bonanza. U.A.M.P.S., a group of 22 municipalities, has agreed to purchase 30 megawatts. Deserets members will need about 70 negawatts, which leaves about 118 megawatts of surplus. Several cities are also looking at buying spot market power from Bonanza. If these fall into place, Bonanza and Deseret's portion of Hunter II could be loaded to their maximum by the end of 1986. Rate Increase For Garkane in 1986 Garkane Power Association has been very fortunate the past several years. Our growth, WAPA surplus power, and cost control procedures have resulted in very favorable power rates for our Members. This good fortune hasnt just happened. It is the result of a cooperative effort by Garkanes members. Board of Directors, and employees. Now because of wholesale power from both of Garkane's power suppliers, Western Area Power Administration and Deseret G&T, a rate increase is necessary in 1986. Member Service Committees have been appointed to meet and review cost of service and rate studies so that recommendations can be made to the Board by April, 1986. cost increases Local Merchants Generous for Baby Santa's elves, urged on by Hospital Auxiliary President Babe Cornford, worked overtime before the holidays and the result is a real bonanza for the first baby born in 1986. Little Heather was born to Lorel Heaton of Fredonia at 5:42 a.m. at the Kane County Hospital on January 3, 1986. She weighed 5 pounds, 10 ounces. Thanks to the generous contributions of local merchants, the baby and family will receive many practical and special gifts. Classic Basketball Tournament featured four teams this year with Pine View High School taking top honors. (Even though our headline stated it was Enterprise H.S.)
