Orrin Hatch, fulfilling a promise to work directly with Utah's local government officials, will hear their concerns through his senate staff during a five day tour of the state next month. The three days of meetings with my 14 Task Forces last August were helpful because I could see first hand how legislation we pass in Washington impacts positively and negatively on the people of Utah, Hatch said. The Task Forces were established as a network whereby local leaders could share concerns with the Senator and for him to disseminate information to his constituents on important legislation. Senator Hatchs top staffers, administrative assistant and state director, will meet with the Washingtonkane Task Force in the Washington County Administration Building on January 10th from 9 to 10 a.m. Concerns addressed during the Senators August visit included paving the Burr Trail and the land exchange between the Bureau of Land Management and the National Forest Service. The local officials' response to the goals of the Task Forces has been great and the open discussions of concerns may enable me to make significant changes in our laws in the coming months, Hatch concluded. Additional meetings will be held in 1986 with Senator Hatch and members of his staff. 2. 644-576- 5. All classes will be held at Kanab High School zation, the Farm Bureau action was made necessary by Congress failure to reach agreement on legislation to replace the current grazing fee law, which expires December 31. Utah livestock producers rely heavily on public land for grazing cattle. "These stcckmen must have the assurance of an economically realistic grazing fee, in order to obtain operating credit to continue their winter, as well as summer grazing operations, Wallentine said. Wallentine said Farm Bureau has sent telegrams to President Reagan, Secretary of the Interior Donald Hodel and Secretary of Agriculture John R. Block, urging an executive order be issued to continue the present grazing fee formula and grazing advisory boards until Congress can reach an agreement on an extension of the law. The Farm Bureau has also urged each member of the Utah Congressional delegation to lobby the Reagan Administration for an executive order. "Livestock production generates more than $1.5 billion in economic activity in Utah each year, Wallentine pointed out. Much of that is dependent upon the grazing of public lands, where ranchers are users of this the major resource, he stated. The Farm Bureau official added the grazing of public lands by domestic livestock is the only way to economically harvest the renewable forage resources of these lands. soon-to-expir- e SUSC OUTREACH participants Gary end Jeri Crosby are happy with the opportunities afforded by the college programs.
