Nominated for the honor this year have been: Kelvert Button, Mike Noteman, Vicki Parker, Emma jv" I Houston, Juanita Terrel and Babe Cornford from Kanab and Marge Crofts and Rosalie Esplin from the Valley Area. The award is given annually to honor some person in the community who gives and has given unselfishly of self and has performed these services without pay. They must have been a citizen of Kane County and have lived here at least three Tickets are available to the banquet and may be purchased from Emma Houston, Rosa Lie Coleman or any member of the Chamber. Local residents are cordially invited and urged to attend. The Chamber of Commerce expressed many thanks for these businesses who have supported the program and continue to do so. These i ip. Dinner Concert Promises Evening of Entertainment There is still time to purchase a ticket tor the dinner concert to be presented by the Kanab High School band and chorus. Tickets are $5 each or $20 for a family. The dinner itself is being catered by Houstons and the concert is sure to be one of the school's highlights of the year. Won't it be great to see tun band marching in oui sumnici parades this vear' Commission Considers Brochures, Roads County Commissioners considered brochures for the travel council, road abandonment at Seeps Ranch in Johnson Canyon and appointments to various organizations among Kane County business in regular session February 11. Jackie Rife and Aina Wikan of the Travel Council were present and discussed several items with the commission. Cost estimates for printing envelopes were discussed and Mrs. Rife was instructed to order from the low estimate after a requisition is submitted and approved. The 120 hour class for EMT designation finishes this weekend with 21 scheduled to complete the course. The course r sessions Thurs-daincluded sessions nights and eight-hou- r on Saturdays and started January 3. four-hou- v Blasdell Selected Chief of Police After a short executive session to discuss and finalize their selection. Bill Blasdell was selected and appointed police chief by the Kanab City Council Tuesday night in the council's regular session. Tom Cram was also hired as patrolman. Each was hired at a salary level of Grade A, Step 21 for Blasdell and Step 15 for Cram, on a six month probationary period. Blasdell, a native of California, has been a member of the City Police Department for four and one half years ard has lived in Kanab since 1974. He is married to the former Carol Sue Cutler. They have three children, Jodi, Brady and Joshua Cram is a native of Kanab, and rradua'ed from Kanab High in 1980. He has been a ja.ler with the Kane County bher.ffs Office for about two vf ars. He is the son of Chad and fie nee Cram. Included in the many skills and subjects learned in the course are oxygen therapy, bleeding and shock, emergency childbirth, poison, drugs and alcohol abuse, CPR, vital signs, communications and reports and extrication. Also included is ten hours working in the Dixie Medical Center emergency room and the Las Vegas Mercy Ambulance Service. Course coordinator and instructor Kim Soper was assisted by Roland Barlow , Tony Sims and Bill Canning. Physician instructors were Howard Roberts, Margaret Mears, Avnish Pandya and Devon Nelson. Specialists were: Darrell Ence, physical thereapist; Don Duncanson, regional EMS Coordinator; Blacky Janes and Edward DeMille of the Highway Patrol, and other EMTs from Kanab, Colorado City and Fredonia. Students finishing the course: from Alton, Joan Kalpakoff and Dorthy Heaton; Colorado City, Ray Johnson. LeGrand Hammon, Edwin Barlow and Alvin Fischer; Glendale, Gerald Spencer. Gara Maxwell, Deone Baird, Elvon Spencer and Wavne Cox. From Kanab, John Silbaugh, Bob Hembree, Myron Hotinger, Molly Houston, Mary Lee Anderson. David Anderson. Robin Hamblin. Jon Martin, Xavier Geiger and Teresa Faurote. were discussed at length. Attorney Heaton was present for the hscussion, after which the commission took this matter under advisement while further information and recommendations are gathered. Commission Chairman Johnson called the public hearing on the road abandonment and exchange at Seeps ranch to order at 10 a.m. Present e were Jim Willis representing Power Company and Lynn Martin representing Seeps ranch. Willis expressed the concern of his company about a power line which is along the road at present on a Kane County franchise. After a discussion, and Martin's assurance that an easement would be granted by the Seeps ranch to Garkane, the county commission directed County Attorney Kirk Heaton to draft an ordinance which would protect Garkanes easement rights as well as any other property interests in the roadway property to be abandoned. Gar-kan- Funds Sought to Remove UDOT Shed The Legislature is now in its final week with approximately 200 bills having gone through the House. By the time the session is over, 500-60bills that affect changes in the law will have gone through the House. Representative Yardley has also talked with the state highway department in hopes of setting aside funds to move the state road shed in Kanab to another site on the highway. Burr Trail funding has passed for $600,000 in the Senate and looks good for the same in the House. This will be used for survey work on the road and make the Federal Government start their funds. The Panguitch to Brian Head Road has passed both houses to go on the state highway system. The Legislature has also passed neqfssary monetary bills for the study, design, and start of the Hatch town dam in 1986. Flood bills are now in the hopper and will total $96.5 million. Twelve and a half for the dredging of the Jordan River and diking. The remainder of the money will go for preliminary work on the Great Salt Lake. The Army core of engineers will do the diking, while the Legislature provides a portion of the full funds. A special session will be called in June for the remainder of the funds. With these matters addressed in the ordinance, the road abandonment would not be detrimental to Kane County. The engineers report as well as other legal matters are to be discussed in executive session on a motion by Commissioner Ramsay. Present at the executive session at various times were Ralph Watson. Don B. Ford. F. Kirk Heaton, Kathy Chamberlain, Sabrina Boardman and all three commissioners. County Attorney Heaton read in which is A full resolution 1985-Resolution Amending Resolution 1981-2- ; Removing certain restrictions over the authority of the Admin' .trative Control Board of the Western Kane County Special Service District No. 1; and providing for the effective date of said amendments." It was approved. An air compressor which has been the road rented previously by department was approved for purchase on a requisition submitted by Vane Campbell. All three commissioners approved the requisition. Appointments of representatives to these groups were addressed. Commissioner Underwood was appointed as the second representative to the health board. A second representative to the Human Services Council board is also needed. Clyde Vance was reappointed on a unanimous vote. Commissioner Ramsay will report back on further progress. Commissioner Underwood informed the commission of some items of possible need involving the courthouse.
