Bushhead is a tributary about 12 miles into Paria Canyon. Five animals destined for Bushead and four were d were Fisher Spring. for fitted similarly They will be monitored monthly by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, said Tom Britt, big game specialist for the Flagstaff Region. The sheep were captured on the Arizona side of Lake Mead and transported overland to Lee's Ferry. They were then placed in a slingload box and flown by helicopter to the release sites. After being held overnight in pens or paddocks constructed by BLM, they were released about 5:30 in the morning. Livestock watering troughs were placed for overnight use and removed after the transplant. Indian pictographs indicate bighorn sheep lived in the Strip centuries ago. The last bighorns were sighted in this area in the early 1900s. The transplant was' made in hopes of reestablishing herd. a The transplant was the culmination of three years of planning and coordinated efforts of the Arizona Game and Fish Department and the Bureau of Land Management. In addition, BLM prepared an environmental assessment that went to more than 40 individuals, federal, state, and local agencies for comment before the final decision was made. A long-tergoal of the Paria-Kana- b Creek habitat management plan is to manage the Paria area for 175 desert bighorn. In the meantime, the sheep will enhance a proposed wilderness area. Observant recreationists may even catch a glimpse of the animals while backpacking Paria Canyon. AG&FD officials ask people to report any sighting to their department or to the BLM offices.
