Over and over again! Last year we watched an established local business get run over and crushed by the big newr government garbage truck. Now this year we will see the same type of thing happen to the golf course at Mt. Carmel Junction. A golf course in Kanab, whether government or private, w ill take a big cut out of the Mt. Carmel Junction golf course income. Private free enterprise has a right to compete, even to take away all of the golfing business, but the government, on any level has no responsibility, has no authority, and has no right to go into any business that could compete with a private business. History is full of lessons about that we have learned government in business. IT WILL NOT WORK. IT CANNOT WORK, it w ill only make things worse. Please use your influence and that of your newspaper to stop the government golf course before it crushes the private free enterprise. Also use your influence to support a Kanab private golf course. Over and over again! Why cant we live the rules of the United States Constitution and by common sense? Thank you, Valdcn Cram Cookie Kudos LETTER TO EDITOR: Thanks so very much to all our Girl Scouts, parents and cookie customers! Thanks to each of you from every girl and adult in the Utah Girl Scout Council. Connee Gates (Mrs. Joseph) Pres.; Linda Fergusson (Mrs. Ron) Council Cookie Chairman; Jo Lynn Hoyt , Neighborhood Cookie Johnson Neighborhood Cookie Chairman. Chair-man;Cher- yl Letter to Editor; Id like to get my two cents in on this proposed golf course. This will be an incredible waste of taxpayers money and water. The costs of making a golf course will be extremely high but the real expense comes after it is built. There will be a need of much equipment and several employees who will A forever become bureaucrats. bureaucrat is one who lives off of taxpayer money until death. Then we must consider the terrible use and waste of our precious water. Water does not come easy here in Southern Utah. And it will take an unbclicvcablc amount of this valuable fluid to keep everything growing. Just how many persons will use this goll course? Maybe a hundred. Are the rest of us to be taxed so that a hundred persons can occasionally play a game? People passing thru Kanab will seldom stop to play. So. will those living here play often enough to pay expenses? I'll bet not. I'll tell you one thing, this is a damn fool notion. And a foolish way to waste money. If some one wants to build his own private golf course, go ahead, do it! But don't ask me to pay my money to support a bunch of maybe's. G. Tyrone Baldwin Nice Program ly DEAR MARLIN: I would like to take this opportunity to extend thanks to the Sons of the Utah Pioneers for the wonderful program at the Ccmetcjy on Memorial Day, honoring our dead . pioneers as well as paying special tribute to my grand father Zadok Judd. ,J " He was a modest i matif 'After walking the 2000 miles as a Mormon Batalhon, returning back to Utah, and eventually pioneering in southern Utah where he settled in Kanab in 1671 and remained until his death in 1909. 1 am sure he would be proud ol the honor shown him on this day. When possible, we will include as much information, and pictures if included, as given by our contnon-prof- it news-minde- ributors. Wc also encourage and welcome Dear Editor, I was appalled by your article on page 3 of Southern Utah News (May 17. 1964) entitled Do Like He Done. By publishing an article praising a man who can scl but not spcT you arc, in effect, saying that education docs not matter. It is because of such an ignorant and shortsighted attitude that Utah is 49th out of the SO states in education spending. Clearly spelling docs not matter to the real estate agent in Kanab where an advertisement displaying photographs of a subdivision contains at least half a dozen misspelled words in its captions. What sort of impression do you think this makes on visitors? They probably go home thinking Southern Utah is the state ol the and illiterate. Their opinion is confirmed if they read articles such as Do Like He Done in the local paper. More important than the visitor are the young people in the community. Do you really want them to believe that spelling J and presumably a great deal of the rest of their education) is a waste of time? What a terrible handicap such a negative and limited view is! Your cartoon on the opposite page illustrates my point very well. The recruiting officer is ready to sign up the High School Graduate and even "HELP YA SPELL YER NAME". Do the people of Kanab want no more for their children than entry into the armed forces? Don't handicap the young support and encourage educational achievement. is power. Knowledge Yours sincerely, Judy Williams Editors Note , M v If the truth were known, despite the errors that inevitably get into print, a good portion of writers ignorant misspellings are caught by or the proof reader the type-settand maybe today by a computer. Since grade school, one of my blessings has been that spelling came easy for me; so does talking; and between the two Im probably rather verbose too much of the time. don't think our young people should have such mispcltings before them as an regular thing. This piece is at least contextually clear. I dont want our children to think any of school and the work that goes with it are a waste of time. But I have noticed more gross uses of incorrect language and spellings in material to which they are more apt to be exposed, ic: popular music, comics and cartoons, record jackets. An Equal Opportunity Affirmative Action Employer e, ar ! 4 cannot disagree with Judy WittianisTcucr, af least regarding spelling and the use of the English language. The piece to which she refers is humorous. I found it so after many years of being overly critical, maybe even judgmental, about the inability of others to spell, particularly those in the writing business. 1 I I. too, have been disturbed by the illiteracy of our graduates, particularly high school. There seems to be less stress on the basic three "KV. which, by the way takes iccnsc with spelling, but has been icccplcd. Even when teachers were .ubjcclcd to the proficiency tests a .tudent must pass in some areas yeforc graduating, barely 30 percent f them passed! Spaghetti Dinner Set June 6 D-D- ay, June ji . i8 6 Remembered On June 6 this year, at Army installations around the country, soldiers will be remembering the , invasion of 40 years ago. Many ceremonies, parades and special exhibits are planned. Of course the invasion of June b, 1944 (the largest amphibious operation in the history oT (Tie world.) was only the beginning of the final liberation of Hitlers "Fortress Six weeks later St.-L- o Europe. would be recaptured by the Allies. Four weeks after that Paris would be liberated. In December, the enemy would make one more desperate attempt to stop the Allies at the Battle of the Bulge, but that attempt would fail. The European Alliance continued into the heart of Germany and ended the war. Today, 40 years later, the United States is still allied for the defense of Europe. While the tyrrany of Nazi oppression was defeated by the Allied armies in 1945, international terrorism, adventurism by the Soviet Union and its surrogates and political and economic coercion is a very real threat in the world today. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO, was founded for the united defense of Europe. Recognizing the threat posed by the growing Soviet presence in Eastern Europe, the United States has joined with IS other Allied nations to deter aggression. The result has been almost 40 years of peace on the European continent. Freedom loving people around the globe long for the day when Armies no longer have to bleed and die as they did in Normandy. It is the willingness and dedication of our people and our Allies to remain and that strong ensures the peace. Gen. Omar Bradley. Commander of theU.S. First in Army the landings, has said it well: The resoluteness of our fighting men and of our Allies on the Normandy beaches gives us the opportunity.. .to build a better world and a more bountiful life with roots nourished by sacrifice, devotion and service. i r sun?-1 New Bishopric of the Kanab Fifth Ward was sustained Sunday, May 27.
