Rates to Kane County Press Treatment Unfair At Robin Dear Marlin, This letter is to inform you of the unfair treatment I received from your principal Douglas Williams at the Region 12 Round Robin tournament last Saturday, March 3. To begin with, there was no provision for press people covering the games. The lady at the desk was gracious enough to allow me admission. I immediately began shooting h pictures of the game. A chair was already placed at the position and I sat on it. Shortly I was told that I couldn't shoot pictures, only from the stands which isnt satisfactory for quality pictures. When 1 explained this (having moved from the area to do so) I received no consideration until Coach Hamblin interceded and said pictures would be allowed, but no chairs. I agreed, stating that the chair was already in place and 1 had only sat on it. My son had moved a chair to sit next to me, only after asking the lady at the door first. I proceeded to shoot pictures without incident through the Milford Bryce Valley game, then went to get something to eat in a Kanab Beaver-Panguitc- restaurant. Upon returning for the second session, I was not allowed admittance, but referred to Williams, who accused me of improprieties, and said I could not have a ticket. Any attempt to reason was ignored, and after verbal abuse, he turned his back and left. Having provided over S200 worth of research for the program, I had Gene Drake paged. He had offered e tickets and a advertisement in the program for the research on tourney teams and state teams for available only the past ten years from the Beaver County News. But Williams searched us out -and ordered Drake not to allow admittance, under any circumstance, and left without a chance to reason. 1 again searched Williams qut and attempted: tafiaasonJMJt received the same aforementioned treatment. Needless to say, I had become piqued at this point, but rather than make a big issue by rounding up region representatives, I left and returned to Milford without seeing the last session. And, 1 might add, that is the last ballgame or any other event I will cover in Kanab as long as Williams is principal. 1 must add that all other personnel were courteous and friendly, and I must say as embarrassed with Williams actions as myself. I've had a good relationship with Kanab schools and the people of Kanab for fifteen years. I have many friends in Kanab and feel they should know the facts, about their principal. The press has always been accorded every hospitality at region events, particularly the Round Robins at Beaver and Panguitch. We are certain that the region board has adopted no such attitude toward the press. Kanab should be congratulated on a beautiful new facility, but if they intend to use it for future region events, they should consider this action by their principal and make attempts to rectify the situation. Also, if they sell concessions, they should allow patrons to take them to their seats, where they can continue to watch the events theyve paid to see. One person 1 know had to stand there and drink four cans of pop he had bought for friends who were in the stands and couldnt take back to them. Needless to say, I'm mad! And before the school year is out there will be few in the region who won't know about Principal Williams. Sincerely, N.E. Red Wilson Overwhelmed By Response full-pag- - Dear Editor, We were responsible for getting the ticket takers for the Round Robin. We were overwhelmed with the outstanding willingness the people of this community had towards making the tournament a great success. ,, At the beginning, we wondered if we would ever be able to find enough 8 people (we usually needed people a day) to man each session. The response was terrific. Not only were people willing to donate then-timonce, but over and over again. It was a great feeling being involved with such great people on a community effort. Thanks to all of you for your support and help. Sincerely, Keith and Diane McAllister 21-2- e Dear Editor: As an American citizen, I would like to put this letter in the paper about the Kanab Hospital, where the name hospital is being assaulted by those running it. - When a person goes in for a flu shot and is charged $82 and pays $70 should leave $12 then on owing. Then he gets a bill for $38.55. That makes $26.55 more than the $12 that was owing after the first payment. Im saying that is what is Then they wonder called a why the people dont come there anymore, and go to Cedar City, St. George or Panguitch. After being ripped off by them, they should change the name to Kanab rip-ojoint instead of hospital, for this is the truth about it and even what people think about them, for the ones that runs it are only putting a bad reputation on themselves and those that work rip-of- f. ff there. Name withheld by request (on file) Thanks For Successful R.R. Dear Editor: I would like to thank the people of Kanab for helping to make the Round Robin basketball tournament a success. The extra effort on the part of the community was appreciated by our visitors. There were many positive comments on our hospitality. The Round Robin tournament was a community event and would not have been successful without the backing of everyone. Thank you. Sincerely, Doug Williams, Principal Kanab High School Appreciates Help Dear Editor: j With the excitement of the Region 12 Round Robin going onT Im sure many were not aware of the Solo and Ensemble Competition taking place in Orderville and the recital here Monday night. 1 would like to express my appreciation to Mr. Downward and those who accompanied these students. I know they spent many hours after school helping individual students perfect their music. Thank you, Keinfocarfs fri.&Sat. 17th Thrift fore levis jeans0 $208 work shirts 1.50 and much mote! Z40 Couth 1st East emroDuenmos 8?s I Hospital Hightlights 1983 ACHIEVEMENTS Outreach Activities As we caught the vision of Outreach Ginics our recruiting efforts were beefed up and our interest to find a better clinic setting for the Valley Ginic was intensified. We were able to work with the City of Orderville, and Glendale, as well as the County Commissioners in obtaining a grant for a new clinic in Orderville, which will be completed in March of this year. This effort, along with the recruiting effort and expansion of our influence to Fredonia, was a major change to the traditional, centrally located Kane County Hospital. A major goal to obtain another physician to serve the patients in our area came to fruition with Dr. Mears the end of June. Not only were we able to expand our relationship to another Community, but the advent of Dr. Mears brought to our community the specialized services of a physician who had received special training in internal ' medicine. This service provides a support base for our local doctors as well as having a lady doctor in our jirea,' which provides a broader choice of patient selection... The support to our hospital by. the . medical staff and the community, in our recruiting efforts is - very" gratifying. Public Relations and Public Supp'd . Such support was experienced aa the Ladies Literary League and the Civic Gub provided assistance in redecorating our front lobby and I changed the appearance by of plants and furniture and paintings by local artists. In December the Kanab Civic Gub donated funds which made possible the purchase of a new color T.V, for the recreation room in the Nursing Home. The Kanab Third Ward Cub Scouts donated puzzles they made for use in the hospital and nursing home and many ladies donated much time in caring for the patients and in working and curling their hair. As the year closed, a newly formed Kane County Hospital Auxiliary was happily and anxiously involved in decorating the Christmas tree for the Nursing Home and the Hospital and was making plans for many activities to be carried out starting with the New Year baby in 1984. Equipment and Building For the first time ever at Kane County Hospital we were able to develop a Bio Medical Engineering relationship to have equipment monitored and calibrated routinely in our hospital, to meet Joint Commission Standards. This service has provided a greater dependability on our equipment, as well as providing us with greater assurance that all of-o- ur equipment is operating accurately to provide correct results and provide safety for our patients. , We saw Samaritan Health Service in action and their real commitment to Kane County Hospital when they provided us with a portable machine, which had been requested for many years and finally arrived. We also, through cooperative efforts with one of our other facilities and the Medical Staff, are able to have Ultra Sound services brought to Kane County Hospital. This program has proven to be very valuable and a great service to the public. It is no longer necessary for local patients to travel for Ultra Sound testing, whether it be for obstetrical needs, or other medical reasons which are diagnosable by Ultra Sound technique. We were able to purchase a new Blood Analyzer and a new Chemical Analyzer which, for the first time, equipment in both gives us back-u- p areas as well as reliable state of the art equipment with expanded capabilities and test result capabilities. We were also able during the year to enhance some of the aesthetic values of the hospital, besides the redecorating of the lobby, we were able to obtain new blinds for all of our the-addit- ion were started with the supervisors to increase their skills in supervision Then these and management. programs were made available for hospital staff. This investment has been well worth while and rewarding for all. Medical staff training has also been greatly increased with a regular scheduled CME program being provided locally for our physicians and professional staff at the hospital. There have been months that we have had as many as three different CME programs brought to us locally at minimal or no costs. We were again successful in enhancing the wage and salary structure at Kane County hospital. In 1983, we were able to bring about increase in approximately an 8 and to make salaries and wages another adjustment to keep our salaries competitive with local health care markets and to upgrade in some situations, the compensation package for our employees. We also nearly completed an exhaustive effort of establishing wage scale entry levels for all positions in the hospital. This task has been basically completed, except for a few minor changes. We are also able to enhance out technical position in the hospital, by having two full time equivalents in our Laboratory and Technician one full time available. By consolidating these two departments, we have increased our efficiency in management span and have been able to respond to the doctors and patients needs by increased hours and better equipment. We were also able during the year to participate in a facility evaluation program which allowed all of our patient rooms, and the nursing home, which provides a more pleasing setting, as well as better control of sunlight and privacy for our patients. We experienced the advantage of belonging to-- large hospital system that cares about patients. Through the surplus - property management program of the Corporation we were able to obtain color television, electric beds, and over bed tables for our patients comfort and safety - a real improvement over hand crank beds. Due to Samaritan Health Service commitment, and intent to provide safe quality patient care and a safe environment in which to work, we were able to have a very major electrical renovation program completed at our Hospital, which has rendered our Hospital to be a very e electrical, modern, and safe facility. Our entire electrical system, as well as our fire alarm system have been updated and monitored. Along with this effort, we are also able to have heaters installed in our bathroom areas of our Nursing Unit to provide greater comfort and warmth for our elderly "patients- - As the year end Closed, we bad begun a project to overhaul both of our boilers and to completely modernize them so that the heating capacity and function of our facility would be modernized and updated to . match - .the .electrical, and again insure oun ability to meet Joint Cbrnmisson Standards in 1984. ' V Human Resources and Staff Development As we became more familiar with the service of the Corporation, we are bie to have ohr first series of onsite training programs for all hospital staff.
