Box Elder News Dear Editor: The Disaster Drill which was carried out last Tuesday was the result of several weeks of planning, coordinating and implementation of ideas into a plan of action. This exercise has been meaningful and rewarding for the various law enforcement agencies, civil defense, fire departments, ambulance association, local industry and the hospital. As I observed the drill from several viewpoints, (as a victim and a patient, a member of the planning and coordinating team and as an employee of the Hospital) I was impressed with several common traits which the various organizations exhibited as we planned and executed the drill. First, I sensed a deep feeling of interest and concern that each agency knew what its functions and responsibilities were in a disaster situation. Second, I felt a sincere commitment from each individual that was involved. A commitment to provide the very best effort and support. To be able to protect life and property and to reduce further risks. Another trait that was apparent in this endeavor was the true spirit of cooperation. Think of it. We had two states involved, two cities, two counties from different states, two sheriffs offices, two fire departments, two city police forces, students from two high schools from two different states, an oil refinery (Arizona Fuels), EMTs from two states and from four cities (Kanab, Fredonia, Orderville and Glendale), a helicopter and parimedic from Flagstaff and the civil defense and the medical staff of the Kane County Hospital and clinic staff and many others. Before organizing such man power and resources, we ask the question why? Why do we take the time and resources to put on a mock disaster of this magnitude? The answer can be summed up as follows: To be prepared and organized so that in the event of such an occurrence, those Catholics Enter Era at Spiritual, Educational, Communal Development Catholic Parish in Kanab has entered a new era of spiritual, educational and communal develop- Christophers ment this past week, stated Dr. Marvin B. It also stressed how birds and animals assisted in the distribution of the trees. The use of the pinon nuts to the Indians and later to the white settlers is discussed.
