Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Dear Editor: 1 especially enjoyed your Sittin and Thinkin column a few issues back where you so delightfully began a characterization series of Old Kanab Characters. There are a few of we Old who remember Characters some of those old characters. For instance, the one you Uncle Hod wrote about, Brown." I guess he really wasn't my uncle, and your grandfather, Isaac Brown, wasnt my real uncle. He was just Uncle Ike. His wife was "Uncle Ike's Nell, his sister, wife of Dave Robinson was "Red Nell." He was the true uncle of my Beulah Frost, and Elma Miles, and that family treated all us kids as the Dick Mack closest of kin. Afterall, my Dad w as their brother-in-law- . I loved your story, but I did take one exception to it. Uncle Hods place was not dirty, nor even messy. His empty cans and beer bottles never littered his clean yards, straight e rows, fine fruit grape-vintrees, or his well cultivated garden with its huge watermelons. After Aunt Viney, their mother died, he and Bill kept a mighty neat place. What kept everyone away from his hooch, his grapes and mouth watering watermelons, was the two big rattlesnakes he kept under those rock steps. Officers and stealing kids alike respected Uncle Hod, and his own special type of body guards. Kanab folks used to have alot of fun kidding each other. There was lots of home talent, active in theater, minstrels, and such. They loved mgking their own shows and using each other for the goat. Gumsey Spencer and Will Dobson were at making jokes on the town. It could have been around 1918 or earlier. Wooleys had a car. It was the first one to come into Kanab, around 1914. Shorty Branson came through there occasionally trying to make his car climb the Kaibab Mountain. There may have been one or two others. Bob Fenton would drive into Kanab occasionally and take all us nieces and nephews for a ride around the block if we would walk up to Aunt Mins corner (across from the present hospital). It was too sandy for a car to make it to our home, another block west. Thel" Bowman Othello, owned the store, and with his merchants eyes, he visioned more and more cars coming into Kanab. Somebody would have to service them. He installed a barrel of gas with a handpump to meet the expanding growth of our little city. Tom Robinson followed the fad and purchased a car. One Sunday he got the urge to go for a joy ride. He had ambitions to go clean out East to the Sand Holler". He must first solve a problem. It was Sunday and the stores were closed. Dear Editor: I have been reading with interest the recent letters to the Editor in the Southern Utah News. Last weeks was of special interest as it concerned me. When I first moved to Fredonia 8'i years ago, I was bitter about having to live here. We had left our home in the White Mountains of Arizona which I felt was the greatest area in the world. After a miserable few weeks, I took a good look at myself and realized it wasnt Fredonia, it was my negative attitude. People had visited us and helped us greatly during our settling period and 1 hadnt appreciated their kindness. The last few days I have given lots of thought to the community and the people who make it such a good place to live. I have realized that without volunteers we would have no youth activities, no celebrations and even no churches. I did not realize that i was monopolizing jobs in the town by going an extra mile without compensation to - ' . t iVi! k V; 'VV w:; do these things. I only thought that the funds saved would help make the new fire truck payment, buy another foot of water line or replace a swing seat at the town park. I am reminded of a situation several weeks ago when a family came to my office concerning a burial plot for their infant. They had been in town for two weeks. With the help of Dennis Mosdell and the town employees we had all the arrangements taken care of. This man with tears in his eyes took my hand and told me how wonderful the people of the community had been. Soohinty WJith I by oy Joy Heaton M Otkar L Recipe Contest Calling all Kids!
