Everyone went swimming every morning at the local pool, at least all those who could go. It was a disappointment that John and some of the other men had to work during that special week, but when they could make each event, they did. Some of the fun games the whole family enjoyed were hunting for money in a tub of sawdust. Doesnt that sound like a must for a sawmill family? What fun all those children must have had. And another highlight of entertainment was held around the when campfire, Grandpa Crofts, (and I mean John) put on his Indian headdress, fancifully full of feathers, (he may even have had a blanket around his shoulders) and he danced around the campfire, with all the children, each with his own tiny headband with a feather sticking up, joining him in dancing and singing that old Indian son Killy, Killy Watch Watch, Kay Yu Kim Kum Kow AH! The Crofts family members have been to many places, as witness the slides they looked at of Hong Kong and Germany. There were also the You Know When slides, and that was in years gone by, when we had a full head of hair, or when we were slender and youthful. Now theres balding heads, gray hair and stout figures, etc. But no matter what the years may, bring, family reunions and gatherings are very special occasions, for old, : and young. To end the week of visits : and festivities, Marjorie and John went to LaVerkin to witness naming Johns Hopkins Medical They went to LaVerkin to see Miriams and Stephens new home, went to Zion for a picnic, and one evening they all gathered at the Valley Grade School for a meeting and to see slides. One of the days, each of the families prepared their own special dishes for a sumptuous meal, and one day they decided it was a must to carry on the tradition, in the Rust family, to make candy. By measuring the density of suspicious looking growths recorded by the CT Scanner, doctors can .determine the malignancy or innocence of these growths. The Scanner and ' "its accompanying computer measure the atomic weight of the tumors. If the nodule has an abnormally high weight doctors will be aware of calcium in the growth. This indicates that the spot on the is a previous infection and is benign. Under these conditions no further tests are necessary. y Before the Scanner, showing a lesion on the lung required diagnostic surgery to remove the tumor for a laboratory determination of the existence of disease. This was accompanied by the anxiety for the patient and family while preparations, operations and lab work were completed before a final pronouncement was made. The computer diag- nosis shortens or eliminates hospital stays saving the patient money and time. Half of all the discoveries of a growth in the lungs prove to be benign. Until the CT Scanner, the only way to determine the nature of the lesion was to open-uthe patient and get the tumor out where lab work could be done. The Johns Hopkins team tested the reliability of the CT Scanner information for over two years on 220 patients. They were able to send 50 of the patients home without any further treatment and 60 more patients, who had been diagnosed by the computer to be free of p cancer, after further testing. Once again, technology has proven its value in improving the quality and length of life.
