UP&L has not purchased the CPN system. On December 15, 1979 the Southwest Power Agency had strong indication of acceptance of their offer by CPN. However, after not hearing back, a meeting was held to move ahead with other alternatives such as condemnation. One hour before that meeting CPN called and unexpectedly said they had signed a letter of intent to sell to UP&L. Now, one day before the Federation-Agencmeeting on filing the condemnation papers on the CPN system, comes another letter announce' ing the new activity. By the Federation-Agencbeing open with their activities and progress, at know when least to call or write their letters. y With Mothers Day this weekend, this picture may be appropriate. Fredonia Public Library You are probably familiar with the old saying, HE who tooteth not his own horn, the same shall not be tooted. We want to toot the horn for the interlibrary loan service. During the past week we have made requests for census microfilms, for information on Ishi and on Marianna Tench, for science fiction books, about famous wives of presi- dents; for information about the IRS, for mysteries, for early Arizona history and for materials to help in Relief Society lessons. ' We have not only asked for material but we also have mailed material from our library to libraries in Winslow, Sun City West, Springerville, Holbrook and Flagstaff. If we cannot furnish the information or book you request, we will try to get it for you. We were so pleased the other day to have a visit from Mrs. Jonreed Lauritzen. As we have stated before, we have a collection of all the books that' Mr.' Lauritzen had" published. Af the time of his death, he had one book ready for publication. Mrs. Lauritzen is sending us a copy of this book for our collection. Whereas when the Southwest Power Agency secures the system, the shareholders will be cashed out, and Oh, the tax bite. Ouch! Either way they will lose the control that has been so good to them at the expense of the people. Libraries are continuing to find good friends in the community who help them build new buildings, add to their collections, develop new programs and support a variety of other activities." Wedgewood explained. They need these friends since most of their budget comes from local sources. Only 13 percent comes from the states, and only five percent of a library's budget is provided by the federal government. Still, he said Librarians, unlike cultural community officials, have not thought of themselves as Wedgewood thinks they should. They provide a unique community service, and they their might as well tap friends," he said. They can do that in unusual ways. Denice Wood One of the many admired women in our town is Beth Pugh, owner of the Fashion Hut and Mr. G.s Gas and Goodies. Beth opened the Fashion Hut in May of 1967 where the Montgomery Ward store is now located. She moved to the Red Hills in September of 1976. At that time, one of her daughters, Dixie, joined her in the business world. Besides running the Fashion Hut. Beth and her late husband, Don, purchased Mr. Gs in July of 1977. Soon after, Don passed away and Beth was left to handle the business affairs. She says, Without the help of close friends and family she never could have done it herself. When Beth is not at the store, there is her "Gal Friday" Karen Johnson, Kenny and Donnell. Beth is one of the women in town who has been in business for over 33 years, that is, on the Main Street of Kanab. The love of her life are her grandchildren and working in the garden. She has received numerous awards for the beautification of the property around Mr. Gs and her own property. As for the Fashion Hut and its contents: It is full of beautiful gifts, ladies apparent, mens fashions, childrens clothing and she has a wide selection of fashion jeans. For Mr. Gs, they are adding on a drive-in- , which will be another much needed service for our community. Thanks, Beth! Just as the Southern Utah Power shareholders knew the importance of not losing control of their electric system by not selling out to UP&L in 1958, you will lose control forever if UP&L picks up your electric system now. Please consider the following: Electric power is public business and public relations are paramount. Doesnt it seem ironic, presumptuous, for max be even strange UP&L's President, Harry Blundell, to end his letter by stating, "We would like to welcome you as a valued customer"? It seems especially presumptuous in light of a company becoming so big and powerful it can ignore the decision of towns it want to enter; which towns have signed resolutions rejecting UP&L in favor of working electric toward their own systems. Especially in Cedar City where the majority vote of the people voted against UP&L in an election to determine whether the people wanted UP&L. CPN is leaving behind a electric sysmoney-makintem.
