The first years of Kanab the local people would trade with the Indians so the Indians would tan buckskin for them. First,' they soaked the deer hides in water to soften them, then they would put them in the ground until the hair would get loose enough to slip. The hide was next laid over a log and the hair scraped off with the sharp edge of a split bone. The brains of the animal were next rubbed into the skin to soften it, then the Indian would chew and rub, chew and rub, until the whole surface was smooth and pliable, pegged to the ground to stretch, then waterproofed by hanging them over a willow fire.
