Why? Because I take many poses during a portrait session. . . Because after Ive taken care to pose my subjects and make my exposures correctly, my photography can only be as good as the lab that processes it for me and 1 use only custom professional labs. Because there is no time limit on a portrait session. Because, if I cut comers on any of the above mentioned, there is a good chance that you will be unhappy, and ifyou are unhappy, then I've failed as a photographer. 28 West Center Kanab, Utah Phone 644-598- 1 I enjoy the article very much. It begins with these words, Those who dont know Alma Heaton probably wont understand the smiles among his friends when he dies. Certainly, a tear or two will fall horn nostalgia, but Alma wouldnt want anyone to mourn too long; he wouldnt stand for it alive and especially not dead. Then the writer, Allen Palmer, goes on, No, he isnt dead yet. To listen to him talk-a- nd he loves to talk-y- ou might get the impression he simply doesnt plan on growing old. . . . Alma has made a vocation of having fun. Using many of the fun things that he did in this area in his youth, plus a wealth of new ideas that hatched in his head, Alma has become an authority on how to have fun, how to let loose, and as he states, The whole purpose of life is to be happy, but it can only be found at the creative level. . . Then he says, . . .most people never arrive there. They build a wall around themselves and refuse to create. They refuse to be active. They are always searching for happiness, but never finding it. Where do you find happiness? Well, for one place, it can be found in Alma's back yard. Alma has turned his back yard, along with his basement, into a playground a la supreme. His back yard is often filled with friends, neighbors, even strangers all interested in having a good time on an assortment of swings, slides, pogo sticks and games. One of the more interesting items has carried over from youthful days. It is an elastic rope, and probably many of the older (?) folk around Kanab will remember a ride on one of those contraptions, as the Heaton brothers fashioned a swing years ago from the elastic ropes used to stop airplanes on aircraft carriers. Alma is still using this swing. He will strap the rider into a saddle, then a number of people will pull the rope back and let go, launching the "victim into the air. If I dont hear it, I start to get worried. All of his amusements, however, are only diversions in his attempt to teach through example, the article states. For instance, he tells of an experience of tying the tails of two cows together in younger rider days to keep them from swatting him and his brothers while milking. However, they forgot about it and later found one cow minus a tail. The lesson he says was thoughtlessness can cause pain to others." Another lesson that merits reprinting: I was on the high school basketball team for four years. It was a tradition for the players to get drunk after the final game, although I never took part in the tradition. Our star player had never tasted liquor and was reluctant to take his first drink. However, since it was tradition, he couldn't resist the pressure and drank until he lost consciousness. He lay unconscious for several days. . .and finally died. The lesson: "When an action is taken just because it is tradition, we need to think twice. His experiences were not all so profound, but are much too numerous to include here. He has written many books and pamphlets that cover the lessons he has learned well. He is critical of spectator sports, largely because all the lessons are being taught on the playing field and not in the stands. Character is never learned in the bleachers, he contends. Just a couple more quotes from Alma: "My father tried to teach me work, work, work. Get close to the earth and youll get close to God. The title of the BYU article was Work is a four-lettword, says Alma Heaton. Drop-out- s from both school and Church first drop out of activities. I believe the Church is not an idea but an activity. We were born to be active-a- nd when we cease to be active, we stop growing. I believe that the basis for thinking is laid down in skills. Words do not give meaning-- we must do something other knowledge the right way and living and doing what we believe. It is the doing of God's will that will get us to heaven not just what we know. Almas life has been helping other people to be active and to, have fun. And this lifetime of dedication has won him the affectionate title at BYU of "The Professor of Fun. These volunteers were nominated by the Kane County Senior Citizens Council and approved by the Kane County Commissioners. Recent training was given by Dr. Von Jarrett of Utah State University and Jack Lyman of the State Energy Office.
