Show Page Four April 17, UTAH NEWS THE SOUTHERN 1975 April 17, 1975 Page Four Kaibab Forest fights beetles A tiny black bug, present in epidemic levels on the Kaibab National Forest, awaits warm weather to begin the systematic destruction of thousands of pon-dero- sa pines. To counter the cyclic upsurge of the mountain pine beetle, an efficient tree killer, the Forest Service had three options do nothing and accept the loss of thousands of acres of virgin ponderosa pine; cut down and treat each infected tree with an insecticide; or offer special incentives to a lumbering firm to harvest the dying trees, remove them from the woods and turn them into lumber. Southwestern Regional Forester Wm. D. Hurst said harvesting was chosen as the least costly and most effective way to combat the beetle. "The trees now occupied by beetles are lost. All we can do is slow the spread of the infestation and that work is beginning, Hurst said. The beetle epidemic centers 12 miles south of Jacob Lake. The heaviest tree killing has occurred over 5,000 acres. Widely scattered dying trees have been observed within an area of 70,000 acres extending for six miles on both sides of the main road to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Kaibab Industries, which holds logging contracts for the entire area, has agreed, through renegotiated contracts, to concentrate its logging efforts on 2.5 million board feet of beetle trees. On March 17, the firm began opening temporary roads through snow to permit markers to begin their search for host trees. The ideal would be to find and remove every infested tree. Realistically, the Forest Service hopes to reduce the number of trees Infested by the mountain pine beetle. The harvesting is planned to begin April 21 and be finished by July 1, about two weeks before adult beetles fly from the dying trees in which they hatched to attach and lay eggs in trees. Kaibab Industries will mill the logs in Fredonia. Normally the firm would not take trees smaller than 12 inches in diameter, but in this case will take infected trees as small as seven inches in diameter. The markers will have to examine each tree for globs of pitch and Entomologists from the Regional Forest Insect and Disease Management office in Albuquerque said the beetle begins teU-ta- le 116 inch di its destructive cycle when it y. matures in Swarms leave trees In which they hatched, drill under the bark of untouched pines nearby and then dig vertical egg galleries from wliich the next generation will emerge a year later. For the state as a whole, the overall gain in business volume amounted to 11.8 per cent during 1974. A large part of the increased dollar sales volume in 1974, however, was due to inflation. According to the report, the average increase in the cost of living last year was 11 percent. When adjustments are made for tills use in the consumer's price index, the net gain for the state was only 0.7 per cent. This record, however, still was considerably better than the experience of the entire nation, which last year registered an overall decline of 2.2 per cent in personal consumption expenditures stated in constant dollars. The Foundation report shows that gross sales in Kane County as measured by local option sales tax coUections amounted to $9,202,000 during 1974. This compares with total business activity of $8,981,000 in 1973, $5,024,000 in 1970, $3,842,000 in 1967. The total increase in business volume between 1967 and 1974 in Kane County was equal to 139.5rc. Throughout the entire state, business activity rose by 119.5 per cent during this same period. Inflation, of course, accounted for much of this gain in the dollar volume of business activity. Between 1967 and 1974 a 47.7 per cent rise was recorded in the consumers price index. Some of the largest percentage gains in business activity last year were recorded in the smaller counties of the state.
