Here is the story of its travels, taken from the Independent, a newspaper at Cottonwood, Ariz.:) by Virginia Patton Petite Linda Phillips of Cottonwood believes honesty is the best and she acts on that policy belief. But her honesty almost got the pretty mother of three children thrown into jail in Utah. Mrs. Phillips husband, Floyd, and their youngsters took off over Labor Day weekend to camp. They were driving back into a canyon to Warm Creek, just over the Utah border, when Mrs. Phillips found something in the road. It was a plaque, a big bronze one, dug deep into the mud left by recent rains. The object was doobviously an historic marker, nated by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers to mark the site of a little settlemen called Pahreah. Speculating that the plaque may be valuable or hold sentimental worth for someone, Mrs. Phillips hauled it back to Cottonwood at the end of their camping trip. On the advice of a friend, she called Deputy Bill Helm, also a friend, and told him of the discovery. teletyped authorities in Flagstaff informing them, he says, that an honest person had found this plaque and wanted to return it. Flagstaff in turn got in touch with authorities in Utah, who demanded the return of the plaque and the arrest of Mrs. Phillips. Helm I called back and told them that she wasnt the one that had stolen it, Helm recalled. Flagstaff called back and asked if we had the thief, Linda Phillips, in custody. Chief Deputy Walt Sanders put in his two cents, also trying to explain the situation. Mrs. Phillips was on the telephone for 45 minutes trying to get things straightened out. They wouldnt believe her. It looked for a time as though Linda Phillips was going to get hauled off to Utah to pay for her crime. My husband said he didnt care, Mrs. Phillips laughed. Bill (Helm) was a friend of the family and he might as well take me to Utah. But then Mrs. Phillips had a somewhat sobering thought. Suppose Flagstaff issued a warrant for her arrest and someone from up there came down here to take her away- - And what if she couldnt reach Helm to have him explain before they slapped the cuffs on? authorities in Flagstaff of her innocence convinced are and Utah has stopped asking that she be locked up. Sanders took the puaque up to Flagstaff last week to eventually be returned to the little Mormon town from which it was stolen. But between gales of laughter, Linda Phillips is having a few second thoughts about honesty! being the best policy. Not that she plans to change shell stick with being honest that. But shes wondering now if its really worth all the trouble. After all this, she said, next to year on vacation were going that sure make to want I Pahreah. darned thing gets back where it Our Greatest Chair Collection Ever For Your Gifting!
