Show Page Two February SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Entered as second-clas- s matter October 6, 1944 at the pest office in Kanab, Utah, under the Act of March 3, 1 879. John Birch Society writer slaps Nixon added value tax by Rex T. Westerfield Director Public Relations John Birch Society Following his State of the Union Message, President Nixon, thru his press secretary, launched a trial balloon of the Added Value Tax. The Added Value Tax is one of the most insidious taxes that can be instituted by any Government because it is a series of hidden taxes which are camouflaged in the retail price of commodities. The general public is then deluded into thinking that increased prices are due to labor and business; and all the while, the real cause is increased taxation. The Nixon hypocrisy was evident in the Wage and Price Controls. After promising the Amer ican people and Congress that he would not impose Wage and Price Controls, President Nixon instituted an economic dictatorship. Significantly, wages and prices were frozen; but taxes and Government spending were not. The Added Value Tax would compound this problem even further. Inflation would continue business and labor receiving the condemnation and blame for it while the real culprit, Government, increases taxes and spending. Regardless of whatever euphemistic title is finally assigned to the Added Value Tax by the Nixon Administration, let us hope that the American people will demand that their Congressmen vote against this vicious and unnecessary tax. U-N govSpeaking of ernment spending, hear what Sam Seiger, Arizona Congressman reports in his last release: As the members are about to resettle in their seats following the Congressional Christmas recess its fitting that we pause for a moment to reflect on how your money is being spent. The Agriculture Research Department has a $59,082 contract with the Univresity of California to determine the effects of laundering conditions upon fraying shirt collars. The chances are that frayed collars are the direct result of the American taxpayers being required to wear their shirts too long in order that they can send that much more money to Washington to be used for projects such as this. No doubt that much research service is approaching this subject from the wrong side.
