It is Frosh day on Friday and everyone knows what this means: crazy looking slaves pushing wheel barrows and pulling wagons s with tough looking riding in the various modes of transportation. Also there will be the chain gang of freshmen painting the F white and wiring tires to be burned that night. The next day the boys have a game with McNary here in Fredonia. To top off the festivities will be a dance in the gym of the school. If the junior class is still unable to get an orchestra, the dance will be a record hop. Travel expenses and mileage; Departmental reports were given by Gary Heaton, Dan Haycock, Arden Judd and Ray Judd. Gary: The pool will be cleaned and painted in readiness for next season. Dan: Report on the town scales and corrals. Arden: Discussed the law about stray dogs. They can be a menace. Ray: Reported that seven blocks have been seal coated. Our town council is really busy and underpaid, so how about a thank you sometime for all the work they do in our behalf? The nationwide conservative group is urging President Nixon to cancel his plans to visit Red China. The plea appears in the form of a four-pag- e Protest Letter to the president, with spaces at the end for five signatures. Members and friends of the organization are being asked to get the letters signed and sent directly to the White House. The Birch Society reports that already nearly two million copies of the letter are in circulation. In discussing the Birch Campaign, Wilfred Edwards, a local leader in the Society, said: We are convinced that a visit by our President to the murderous criminals who control mainland China would be disastrous for all freedom-loving people. It would mean a betrayal of our allies in Asia, as well as an abandonment of millions of Chinese who are suffering under one of the most despotic tyrannies in history. Citing a recent U. S. Senate Subcommittee entitled, report The Human Cost of Communism in China, Mr. Edwards continMao Tse, Chou En Lai, ued: and their band of cutthroats have murdered somewhere between 34 million and 63 million of their fellow Chinese while consolidating and maintaining their power. GLEN CANYON NO. 94 I October 7, SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS, Kanab, Utah 7, 1971 President of the United States meet with them as equals, and to accept them as the rulers of the Chinese people would be a betrayal of all that this country stands for and represents. The protest letter to the President cites a number of reasons why the visit would be unwise. These include the fact that the United States is still technically at war in Korea with Red China, that Red Chinese arms and equipment still fuel North Vietnams war effort, that Red Chinese propaganda and direction support revolutionary activities in this country and around the world, and that, despite claims to the contrary, Red China is still the leading producer and exporter of heroin and opium. In fact, the ComBirch Society contends, munist China has only two significant exports: drugs and revolution. And both bring enslavement and death. In announcing the Birch Campaign, Robert Welch, the founder and president of the declared: organization Our undertaking is to persuade the President to call off his trip to Peking altogether. In that effort we need to bring more patriotic Americans to understand better what is involved in the visit; and to bring those who do understand to make their protests more numerous and more emphatic. Mr. Edwards stated that the campaign is meeting with a very good reception in Kanab, and that most persons who red the "protest letter agree to sign it. He also said that copies of the letter are available upon request, simply by writing to him at P. 0. Box 539, Kanab, Utah. Mr. Edwards concluded: There are too many people who never write to Congress, to the press, and especially to the President. We feel that this is a good opportunity for concerned Americans to exercise their right to speak out on a major issue. BARKS from Barco Paul and Francis McCormick went to Flagstaff for the weekend. They also drove over to Grand Canyon for the game. Francis really enjoyed the trip as she had never driven over the road from Cameron to Grand Canyon in the daylight before. It had always been at night. It surely is a beautiful canyon. While the McCormicks were at Flagstaff they visited with George and Rea and their two children and Jon-ni- e and Martine. Nedra Baughman has also been on a vacation. She went to Phoenix last week to see her children and spent some time shopping. Oscar and Alta Brooksby had visitors for the weekend: Velan and Karen Call and their sons, Brent, Rusty, Kevin, and Lance. They were here for the farewell held in honor of Robin who is going to Kentucky on a mission. Rusell and Connie Keller from Kanab were also here. Bishop and Mrs. LeRoy Heaton went to conference in Salt Lake City this past week. Esther left Tuesday and took Alta Brooksgy with here, and LeRoy left Thursday. Lots of Fredonia people have had the flu. It looks like the bug has been satisfied for a while though. Have you ever wondered what goes on at a Town Council Meeting?
