Actually it wasnt so much that Millard played top notch ball, but it was a bad night for the Cowboys. They seemed to be dead on their feet and nothing went right for them. The Eagles threw a good zone s defense at the Cowboys, and cagers just couldnt get the round ball to drop in. Millard led after the first eight minutes. The Cowboys came to life in the second period and led by two at halftime. In the .third period the Eagles hit 12 straight while Kanab did no scoring, but the Cowboys did come back again and led 51 50 with five minutes remaining in the w game. Then it was a battle to the end, with .the Eagles pulling ahead at the buzzer, Ka-nab- 18-1- see-sa- 62-5- Millards George led all scorers with 24 points, while Gary Crosby carried Kanab with 23, followed by Harold Hamblin, with 16. Don Corry had one of his poorest nights, hit only 3 from the field and 3 out of 9 from the line. There seemed to be a cover on the basket. Bob Johnson with 1; and Denny Frost with 8 rounded out the Cowboy scoring. Fridays game with Milford was easier for Cowboys and Cowboy fans to wear, as Kanab downed a good Milford team by a 5547 score. The Cowboys, although making a slow start, showed that they were a power to be reckoned with. The Cowboys led during most of the game, leading 12-9 at the first period and by 28-2-0 at half time. The Pokes began to hit their stride in the third period and FOB were leading the Tigers by as much as 14 points. The third for Kanab. period ended 43-3- The final eight minutes saw Milford make a game of it, mostly from the charity stripe, and with 3:10 remaining Kanab held a lead. With 1:43 minutes left Kanab led 5245 and by now were playing without the services of Harold Hamblin and Gary Crosby who had left the game via the five foul rule. 48-4- 3 The Cowboys were able to maintain their lead, playing a freeze the ball type game, and stay in the tournament with a 55-4- 7 victory. Gary Crosby led all scorers, hitting 12 field goals and 6 of 7 free .throws for a total of 30 points. Hamblin got 2 points, Frost came up with 10, Corry 11, Hulet had 1, and Jim Johnson had 1. Disaster hit the Cowboys Saturday when they met Hurricane, a team they had already defeated twice in league play. The Tigers, however, paid no attention to past records and came out strong to defeat the and dash the Cowboys Pokes hopes of a long overdue trip to State against the Dixie 61-- 56 scoring Crosby, as their two little men were on him every time he tried to make a move, and they held him to 9 points for the evening. The Tiger viotory came from the charity line, as Kanab scored one more field goal than did Hurricane. However, tht Tigers marched to the foul line 25 times, hitting on 15; while Kanab shot only 11 fouls, making eight of them. Hamblin led the Cowboy scoring with 19; rounding out the rest of the score were Arlon Chamberlain with 1, Jim Johnson with 4, Corry with 12, and Frost with 11. Fans staying after the game for the awards were disappointed when officials announced ar team would that the not be made known until after the State Tournament. Kanab, then, ended up in the number six spot of the eight teams entered in the tourney. Although beaten out of the Round Robin, the Kanab Cowboys still remain champions of the Southern Division of Region Eight with a 6 2 league record. All-St- High School hardwoods. The two teams pretty much traded baskets in the first period with Hamblin hitting sev- eral sensational 25 footers. Kanab had a seven point advantage at the end of this quarter, and were able to hold off several Tiger rallys in the second period to lead 36 31 at halftime. Denny Frost found himself in foul trouble in the first half, with four infractions called against him, and his play was hampered by this fact. The second half belonged to Hurricane and they took the lead from Kanab with 2.34 minutes remaining in the game. It was dose the rest of the way, but the Cowboys were unable to regain the lead. During the season the Lynx had won 9 games and lost Lynx 3. First game of the tournament was Friday with Salome and the Lynx were victorious. Saturday morning, however, they met defeat when they tangled with McNary. This really upset the Lynx as they had defeated the McNary Green Devils on the Devil floor as well as at Fredonia. Saturday k evening the Lynx met the Spartans and although this game went into overtime, the in the Lynx final score was Ash-For- 71-7- 8 favor. The final rating for the Northern Class C League is Grand Canyon 1st, McNary 2nd, Fredonia 3rd, and AshFork 4th. The team returned home af- ter the game, arriving here at oclock Sunday morning. Those accompanying the team to Prescott were Superintendent J. M. Jeffery, Coach J. B. Jordan, Duane Judd, and Darol Heaton. March 6, 1969 Page Five With basketball over for the Valley High School Buffaloes, there is time to reflect back over the season and analyze the team and determine in our own minds if the year was a success. I, like others of the downtown coaches, have reviewed the season in the week following the region round robin and will pass on my observations. First in the comment colI think a degree of recognition should be given to the coach of the second place Bufumn faloes. Coach Quin Newby is one that will never solicit publicity but he has worked to bring a young team further in one season than I expected could be done. With two-timRegion Seven ace Keary Workman as his only senior ball player, Coach Newby has developed a group of boys that have a great e desire to play basketball and to win. I have traveled with Quin to most of the games this year and been closely associated with the boys, and, without exception, the ten team members love, admire and respect their coach. My admiration of the abilities of Coach Newby have increased more this year if for no other reason than that I have seen what he can do for a group of boys. Congratulations go to you, Coach Newby, for your success. KEARY WORKMAN In an attepmt to pick a most well. He also has a good jump shot that impressed me, especially since he looked so good against Richfield in the round robin. DOUG CARROLL Although not an offensive threat (mostly because he didnt drive or shoot) Dougs show is on defense. He is probably one of the most improved ball players this season and his rebounding ability has really been impressive. Doug is going to work on his shooting this summer and should be back in his starting position next year. SHERMAN COX Like Doug, Sherman has improved a great deal during the season. As a sophomore he has been an outstanding guard and has come in on several occasions and sparked the team. He has a good outside shot and drives good as well. He has good spring for rebounding but tends to be over aggressive and is caught out of position at times. Experience will correct this error, however, and he will be pushing for a starting role next year. ED HEPWORTH The sixth man, the one to replace a forward or center, is Ed Hepworth. He has good balance as he is about equal on defense as he is on offense. He has filled in several games and looked good this year. He has LEON BRINKERHOFF One of the two freshmen on our team, Leon has played J.V. ball all year with a few appearances in varsity games. He has great moves in close but needs work on hitting those close ones. He has confidence in his playing and will probably be the replacement center for Keary next year. He will have a tough job filling the shoes left by Workman but Leon has the desire and ability to fill them. JIM HOYT The second of our freshmen, Jim hasnt seen much varsity action but the experience on the varsity and J.V. action has been invaluable to him. His size and coordination impress me and he is a good shot. Ive done a lot of talking about individuals on the team but one outstanding quality is the teamwork the boys have shown. They are a fine group and deserve the recognition they have received this year. I, for one, am looking forward to next year and hope for a better showing. The Buffs have some good young kids that will improve and develop into a working basketball machine. I give my personal congratulations to the team and wish them luck this summer as they work on improving their talents. An outstandin. He has good ability has been carry-ovefrom last ing year, Keary has put more personal as a driving guard and has surprised some opponents this effort and work into than any player on year. He will also improve this the team. He has the desire to summer and be working for a be a great ball player and he starting role. has achieved his reward. He has been and and is an candidate. He has been our leading scorer all year and has played consistant ball each game. Keary is planning on an LDS mission after graduation and I wish him success in this noble Kanab News Notes r Mrs. Areola Rider went to Salt Lake City for medical attention this week with Lois Swapp who went to her son Lewis wedding in the Logan Temple. n all-stat- e NEW SPRING service. MARLO SPENCER The second of our 6 foot starters, Mario has made a signifi- cant name for himself this year. I thought he started the season a little slow this year compared to what I expected. He seemed lax on rebounding and wasnt the hustler I remembered from the year before. But before the league started he shaped up. Mario is a top defensive player and coupled with his shooting ability makes him the best balanced player on the team. He ranks second in scoring. Mario will be with us next year, of course, and I expect to see some improvement in him over the summer. GREG TAIT As a starting guard this year, Greg has shown me one thing that is more impressive about him than any other teammate. He has the ability to drop long outside shots in for two points. As, you know, it is outside shooting that breaks a zone and he thas done that for us several times. Although he is not the quickest of our guards and he doesnt drive much, he is no slouch on defense and he will be working for his position as starter again next year. ROGER GOULDING Another of our starting junior guards. Roger has shown a couple of things that, if worked on this summer, will win him a position next year. First he is quick out front and he drives Snowmobiling On Kaibab Mountain Brochures Letterheads Business Cards Envelopes Business Forms ' by Don Ellison Monday morning, March 3, a group of sportsmen from Twin Falls, Idaho, Salt Lake City, Provo, and Heber City went out on the Kaibab Mountain to test the snow for snow mobiling. There were 40 snow-goiunits with the group and comment from the group was that it was certainly a grand trio. With all of the activity in snowmobiling it is likely that the Kaibab Mounain will be popular in the winter time as well as in the summer. ng YOU NAME IT - -- WE'LL PRINT IT (Except money and stamps) Kanab, Utah |
