Utahs earliest, and probably oldest, annual race meet sponsored by Kanab Lions, will take place this year May 19 and 20. Always considered as the tunning up meet in the state, the Kanab meet holds wide interest with horses coming from not only many cities in Utah, but from Arizona and Nevada as well, and fence across the front of the arena area. Two races have futurity been added to this years race r meet program for old colts in both the quarter horse and thoroughbred classes. More details on this attraction will be published during coming weeks. The grounds and buildings at the race track, in north Kanab, are looking better than at any previous time, and leveling, new fencing, and various other projects will make for another top race meet again this year. Parades, contests, childrens and young folks activities, and the usual regular attractions will fill out the two big days, Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20. 84741, Thursday, April sums Precipitation for water year $1.00 Yearly, 10c Single Copy C2g0IS on HggCx by Forace Green Expressing the opinion that Gun Sight could well become the most popular area on Lake Powell in a few years, Rep. Laurence J. Burton gave a boost to the drive to get work started this summer on a bridge across the Wahweap at Glen Canyon City and the road to the site. Meeting with the board of directors of the Kanab Chamber of Commerce following a dinner in the Chefs Palace Tuesday night Mr. Burton said, If you get back of the Gun Sight development and push, in a few years it could well become a more popular attraction than Wahweap. Plans Changed Mr. Burton arrived in Kanab Tuesday evening from Lake Powell with a group of Bureau of Land Management officials that included Boyd L. Rasmussen, national director of the Bureau, Robert D. Nielson, Utah State BLM director, and Don Gipe, district manager of the Kanab District, which includes most of Kane County and part of Garfield. The dinner was sponsored by the BLM. Plans of the group to take a trip up Cottonwood Wash Wednesday were changed by the snowfall. They went up highway 89 to Escalante instead. While the storm prohibited the inches snow received April 12 11.84 in. beginning Oct. 1, 19G6 from normal, plus Departure 4.24 inches. 13, 1967 K1D group from visiting part of the country local leaders would have liked them to see, it gave a vivid picture of what backers of Gun Sight have been talking about when they mention safety and convenience on the Iake. ExiK'rienee Rough Waters Rough water developed to the point that one small boat was in distreess, asked for help, and va towed down the channel to safety. Mr. Burton said there was another boat on the bank that didn't ask for help but probably didnt want to face the waves, and a third boat tried to follow in their wake but gave it up and pulled over to the side. While neither were in distress they both could well have spent the night on a shelf along the lake, in the opinion of Mr. Burton. Where do you want to be when you get on the Lake? Mr. Burton asked. The two hour ride up the channel from the dam is beautiful. The steep walls are something to see. But after once or twice through the trip is no longer a pleasure. Utah Launcliing Needed When you get on the lake you want to be where you can explore the side canyons, or fish, or see the beauty of the lake itself. These places are in Utah, and we should be able to reach them by road and launch near them, the Congressman pointed out. This means development area. The first step, Mr. Burton pointed out, was to get started on the road. He was pleased to hear that appioval of the Glen Canyon City bridge was near. He said that the entire Utah delegaof the Gun Sight tion w'ould go to work immediately on getting an EDA application approved for the balance of the road as soon as the application is filed. Go To Work The day I Immediately arrive back in Washington I will call George Ilaitog about the development of the Gun Sight area, the Congressman promised. In addition to those mentioned it was attended by Bill Smirl, Bernell Lewis, Sterling Johnson, and ed Doyle Swallow. Schools Need Help Mr. Swallow, superintendent of the Kane County School District, ask Mr. Burton about securing impacted area school funds for a school that will have to be established in the Bullfrog area to take care of childen of employees at t.et development. The school d'strict does not have funds for such a project and is seeking government help.
