Care For Present Water First Then Look For New Source by Dwain Haacke There has been much said about how to increase our irrigation water supplies such as the construction of storage reservoirs or drilling wells. True this will increase our water supplies but why first install expensive projects only to wEiste it in our irrigation systems ana on our land. There is a little saying that goes like this Do First Things First. should Irrigation companies first determine the potential irrigation water needs possible under their system and then develop and improve their system to meet their potential demands. This potential might be more than what the present supply will Mr. and Mrs. Joe (Ramona) provide. If the from California visiting her. present supply only delivers 8 c.f.s. it is obvious must be developed that 12 c.f.s. from other sources. The improvement of irrigation systems alone is not the complete answer, however. Farmers will need to improve their farm systems and methods of irrigating, too. This can be done by installing ditch lining, water control structures and by land leveling. Land leveling is one of the most important factors in stretching our water supply and with it you get increase production from your lands Eilong with other benefits. Land leveling must be done right to be most effective. Fields are staked every 60 feet to form a grid over the land are then surveyed by an engineer from the Soil Conservation Service. He takes the survey and from this determines the amount of cuts and fills at each stake necessary to make the ground level. The equipment operator levels the land according to this plan. This service is available to all farmers through the Kane County Soil Conservation District with the service from the Soil Conservation Service. The farmer can receive cost sharing for this type of work from the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service all located in Kanab. rrigation CompEUiy to clean-u- p lebris from irrgiation ditch from ity dump along esist side of high-vato Heatons place. Cedar City has also sent in acceptance of the challenge. The letter from Mr. Jacobs, addressed to Rex Christensen, pres-den- t, and Fred Reese, contest chairman, reads: In reference to the challenge you have offered us, concerning a good weather contest, you stirred our fighting blood and we are ready to take you on. Seriously, we took your idea up at our Tuesday C of C meeting and it was very enthusiastically received, in fact, the vote for the contest was unanimous. So now that we have met your challenge what is the next step? If you have made any plans let us in on them.
