Burton and nine other Republican members of the House Agriculture Committee have urged Secretary of Agriculture Orville Freeman to take a more active role in defending the interests of farmers. Rep. Burton and his colleagues particularly took Secretary Freeman to task for being mute cm the issue of minimum wages for agriculture. Earlier Mr. Burton had charged that the proposed mini- mum wage law fear seasonal farm workers would send some farmers into bankruptcy, cause a rise in food prices, and lead to more unemployment by hastening conversion to machine labor. The Republican Congressmens leter to Secretary Freeman said in part: We want to take this opportunity to express to you our concern about H. R. 10518, the pending legislation dealing with minimum wages for agriculture, and to urge you to take a more active role in defending the interests of farmers. Actually we are quite surprised that ydu have remained silent on this important issue. Your voice in the councils of the Administration and in the balls of Congress has often been heard on many other issues, but on this very important legislation you have been unusually mute.
