M. Hod-gi- n of the Kaibab National For0 est has announced that a acre control project will be undertaken this spring against the Great Basin tent caterpillars on aspen trees. The project will be conducted on parts of the Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon National -Park and the Navajo Indian Reservation. One or two more years of leaf eating by the caterpillars would likely kill the aspen trees involved. Forest Service scientists have been following the progress of the infestations Since it first started. Their Investigations Indicate that natural control factors have not been able to check the growing infestation. At stake are timber, recreational and wildlife values, since aspen is an important deer food. The Infestation on the Navajo Reservation also threatens to contaminate water supplies due to millions of the Insects drowning in streams and springs. The Game and Fish Departments of Arizona and Utah have been advised of the project as has the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The insecticide used win be Sevin, an insecticide specifically approved for use in these areas, by the National Pesticide Review Board. This insecticide is not toxic to humans, birds or animals in the light application needed to kill the tent caterpillar. 22.-70- Li-e- time-Than- U. S.
