To point out the urgency of this problem, Mr. Branzell called attention to the 33 firearms accidents which occured last year, and noted that all of them could be traced directly to improper use of the weapon. In the field, the most common causes foj-- accidents were where the victunhwas out of sight of the shooter, where the victim came in the line of fire while the hunter was swinging on game, and where the victim was mistaken for game. In no case could any accident be termed unpreventable. Also it was surprising to note that almost half the accidents were self inflicted indicating that the average hunter stands almost as good a chance to shoot himself as someone else. As in past years, horse play and the old lament, "I didnt know it was loaded were heard far too often. Mr. Branzell encouraged all hunters to know and follow safe gun handling practices. Treat every gun as If it were loaded. Always, always point the muzzle in a safe direction. Be sure of your target. Keep your finger out . of the trigger guard until ready to, fire.
