Since the land on any farm is different from on your neighbors, you need to know about your own farm. Most of all, you need to know what you can safely use each part of it for and how you should treat it to keep it productive. To find out just what kind of soil you have, the Soil Conservation Service makes a soil survey. After the survey, each soil is classified as to its capability. tht capabil- ity classes, shown on a soil and land capability map which becomes a part of your conservation plan. They are numbered by Roman numerals on your map. As you go from Class I to Class VIII, in use become fewer and the risks of soil erosion becomes greater. Land in Classes I to IV can be safely used for cultivated crops; which leave the soils bare part of the time, or for crops that keep the soil covered all the time. But as you go from Class I to Class IV your choices become fewer. Also, the conservation practices needed if you cultivate become mare difficult to apply and keep working efficiently. Class V iand is not suited to ordinary cultivation usually because it is wet to much of the time, because it is too stony, or because the growing season is too short.
