Show Thursday, August 27, 1859 SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS, Kanab, Utah It will bo warmly remembered long after it is gone. This characteristic may perhaps serve partly to explain an old enigma, long debated in the ranks: What, is it that makes the Elbeetian Legion work, without laws, officers or d ies yet without a hitch? it remains in fact, a minor miracle long observed by others than ourselves. A number of Boy Scout officials belong to the Legion, by virtue of their early experience as Lone Scouts. In 1956 the Legion was graciously entertained en masse, both at the Boy Scout headquarters in New Brunswick, New' Jersey, and at the Schiff Memorial Training School for professional Seouters at Mendham. Mr. Arthur Schuck, the Chief Scout Executive, accepted gifts toward a Lone Scout museum. Charles Merlins explanation of the Legions vitality is simple, if hardly explicit. Nobody knows what makes it work, is his puzzled yet prideful comment. "But it does. In all candidness one feels bound to accuse Elbeetian Number 1 of his own qualities. Wm. D. Boyce organized the Lone Scouts of America, and started it rolling in 1915, by sheer force of personality. It was a movement in which F. Allan Morgan and Perry Emerson Thompson, personalities in their own right, took no small part. In a free exchange of creative energy, thous-ond.of intelligent hoys added their own weight, a chorus vast, impressive, and still echoing Personal Touch As originator and leader of the Legion alumni group, Charles Merlin inherited the mantle. A worthy choice, his own matchless personality has proven equal to the worthy task. He set the pattern for friendship, for tolerance, and for the original and living ELBEE-TEMagazine. Month after month, hundreds of Elbeetians find a brief note of greeting on the backs of the envelopes containing the magazine, in the handwriting of Elbeetian Number 1. The incomparable personal touch! Christ built Christianity on the simple basis of a perfect personality. Joseph Smith presented the world with a modern version of that process, and Brigham Young led the Disci-- of CEREMONIES MASTER Charles J. Well, its the alumni of the old Lone Scouts of America founded in 1915 by a Chicago publisher, William Dickson Boyce. Mr. Boyce also founded the Boy Scouts of America in 1910, after returning from a trip to England. Perhaps you are familiar with the incident that brought about this grand organization for Boys. Mr. Bovee lost his way in a London fog and was aided by a Boy Scout who refused any payment saying' that it was his good -- deed for the day. Mr. Boyce, long an admirer of boys, became very interested, met with Sir Baden Powell and, when he returned to America, was one of the men who chartered the Bov Scouts. Mr Bowman was a genial man, round faced, heavy and with a durable smile. He knew right away that I didn't even know what sort of things to buy for stocking a ranger cabin, so he made it easy for me by suggesting, and I made it easy for both of us by taking anything he thought 1 would need My purchases were on the cuff of cohr.se, but when my first paycheck arrived via Mr. Mann. I returned to Kanab to pay up and restock for another month of eating my own cooking. One item that didnt need restocking was flour. The smallest sack carried by the Bowman store was 50 lbs, and that much flour can make an awful lot of biscuits.
