TT New Correspondent 1$ Average For Properly Taxes Utah is an average state with respect to its overall relative property tax burden. This conclusion was reached by Utah Foundation in its latest study on the property tax burden in the 48 states. Recording to the Foundation's report,; Utah ranked, 28th in the nation in the amount of state and local property taxes collect-- , ed per capita during 1957. The property fax burden was equal to $71.12 pfer captia in Utah, compared with $75.15 per person throughout the United States and $81.12 per person in the eight Mountain States. The reports observes that a large part of the property tax burden throughout the nation is paid by business and industry. In Utah, 56.9 per cent of the total property tax bill last year was paid by owners of commercial and industrial property. Because of the large mining valuations in the state, commercial and u s t r i a property comprises a substantially greater proportion of the total property tax base in Utah than is the case for the nation as a whole. As a result, the relative tax burden on noncommercial . property in .Utah probably is somewhat below the national average. When property taxes are related to personal income, Utah ranks 20th among the 48 states, to the Foundations according study. Property taxes in LTtah wrere egual to 4.47 per cent of the State's personal income. Throughout the 48 states, taxes were equal to 3.98 per cent of the nations total income. In the eight Mountain States, approximately 4.68 per cent of the personal income wrent for property taxes. Foundation analysis point out that among the Western States, the relative property tax burden is highest in California and Montana. On the other hand, the property tax is used least in New Mexico and Washington. Washington, however, currently imposes the highest state sales tax in the nation with a rate of 4 per cent. in-- d 1 Mrs. Edith Holmes has taken over correspondent duties fgr thc S. U.
