Smith, livestock marketing specialist at Utah State University, Logan. Finishers now have considerably more cattle in preparation for the market than a year previous. If cattle are not pretty evenly distributed on the market during the next two ifionths, there is danger that a weak market could result, at least for a short time. The present prices for cattle are well above last years levels, so it doesnt seem likely that the market can absorb much of an increase in supply without some decline. There was 45 percent more cattle on feed in the 900 to 1100 pound class this July than there was a year ago. Cattle on feed and weighing over 1100 pounds was up 13 percent. On July 1, 1958, there was 4,269,000 cattle in the 13 states compared to a year ago. The condition which could bring about a bad market would be for too many cattle to head for the market at the same time. The January to June red meat output was 7 percent below last years and beef was down 8 percent; veal was down 20 percent. The falling off of meat production during this period accounts for the price of cattle holding up so well during this period. Orderly marketing is a MUST! One market glut can cost feeders thousands of dollars and this will be' especially true during the next two months. Shown here are a few of the many youngsters who are helping this year. The truth of the statement that the strength of a nation lies in its youth can not be doubted by your County Fair Staff. Each year a good share of the responsibility for the Fairs production lies on the strong shoulders of our youngsters. Some are gaining experience as Junior Assistants while others, you may note, hold supervisory positions in spite of their age. One of the most amazing and important experiences of my life has been the ten years association with the Fair and its Junior Assistant program. It gives me a great personal thrill to see the ability of our youngsters develop. They definitely deserve our thanks and our faith for a great future. To our Youth Symbolized by those you see above: Charles, who contributes by leading his F.F.A. Club; Darlene, taking time from a busy schedule to prepare for the Miss Kane County Pageant; Shauna and Deon, outstanding and Junior Departmental Assistants; Al, supervising a livestock Dept.; Bill, who made and finished most of the pictures in this book, handles tape recordings and radio publicity; and Evelyn, just out of high school and doing an outstanding job as Secretary, we offer our sincere appreciation. These are just a small part of the youngsters who are doing their best. To all who have and are helping, we offer this heaitfelt word of thanks. Much of the credit W. R.
