Steel Company Conference In Kanab February 22, 23rd session. For There were two missionaries returned from foreign missions who reported. Bruce Hoyt of the Alton Ward from Southern States and Lee Cornell Chamber-laof the Orderville Ward from the British Mission. Following the Saturday evening Husband and Wives session a social was held in the Kanab High School auditorium. A program, dancing and refreshments was provided. Music for the Sunday general session was presented by the Kanab Stake Singing Mothers under the direction of Sister Lor-en-e Lamb with Sister Leah Brinkerhoff at the organ. The following songs were presented: Holiness Becometh the House of the Lord, Captain of Isreals Host, The Lords Prayer. For the Strength of the Hills, Lift Thine Eyes to the Mountains", and The Wintery Day Descending to a Close. Soloist for the last number was Sister Donna Rae Tietjen. Loud speaking facilities were f operated by Claude Y. for the overflow crowd in the chapel basement. Present at the Sunday morning session were 588 persons and 578 in the afternoon. Bishop Claud M. Glazier reported on the progress of the Kanab Stake House and appealed to the people to complete it by next Christmas. The estimated cost of the project is $306,-00It is anticipated that the Stake Center will be one of the best in the Church when Completed according to the Church architect who inspected the construction Saturday. AIT who have available time were asked to report at the project to assist in the project. An evening shift from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. will be started when the days get longer and the construction has progressed. Other speakers were: Presi dent Daniel S. Frost, President Odell J. Watson, President Ernest Jay Whiting Jr., Charles Cecil Pugh, Louis Louck, Alice Tait, Brother Wilson of Page Branch, Edward Riggs, James Valton E. . Brinkerhoff, and Thomas Lawson. Subjects stressed were: The importance of youth, The responsibility of youth leaders and parents, Love of God and fellow men, The Power of Prayer the Priesthood, Repentance, Responsibility of members to live exemplary lives, Responsibility of church members, Spiritual gifts, Gaining a testimony, and Family prayer. Prayers were offered by the following members of the High Burton J. McAllister, Council: Burke B. Sorenson, Allen M. Judd, Boyd Y. McAllister, Byron P. Fisher, Clifton Young,' Charles Cecil Pugh, and Z. Ray Judd. A District Scout Court of Honor was held in the evening session under the direction of the Mutual Improvement Association. Four Fredonia people have parts in the play, they are: Delon Sellman Winslow Chritsensen, Glenna Whiting and Kathleen Swapp. The play will be presented three times first at Orderville, on Monday night, then Fredonia on Wednesday night and a final performance at Kanab, on Thursday night. Everyone knows from past experience that the college always brings an interesting program. This coming Friday February 28th the studentbody will meet in the gym for an hours entertainment as the 8th grade presents their class assembly. They have put a lot of work into their ideas and the performance should be very good. Friday evening the student body will sponsor a Sock Dance. The person with the brightest socks will win a prize and the music will be those "Good Ole Mountain Dew Soys, Norman Swapp and Sherman Stewart. The past few dances we have had have not been what they can be. Everyone enjoys a good time so lets all com? to the dance Friday night. Mr. Judd has set his operetta date for March 12 and 13. The name of the operetta is Medics and Merriement and proves to be just that. The state F.H.A. convention has been set for March 14 and 15 at Salt Lake City. Judy Lewis has been chosen to run for the state office of 4th Vice President We all know she can do a good job and wish her luck. Now that the Lariettes have had a two weeks rest they will start practice this Thursday for their Lariette Review. All of the marches and routines we have done will be presented as well as entertainment from the Dixie College Rebelettes, Hurricane Tigerettes, and the Enterprise Wolverines. A lot of work has been done on our marches and wed like to thank the townspeople for staying to see our halftime activities. ties. Mrs. Clara Esplin Spencer Clara Esplin Spencer Honored As Kanab Mother of the Year By Adonis Robjnson Kanah KANAB A woman, who belived she could raise her children better ' bv is Kanabs home, staying "Mother of the. year for 1958. Mrs. Clara Esplin Spencer has been named to the honor by the Kanab Ladies Literary League. She will compete with other contestants from the Southern Utah District of Federated Clubs in the contest to name a state "mother of the year. When Mrs Spencers husband, Homer Brown Spencer, died in 1933, Mrs. Spencer was left with eight children, the oldest a girl 16, the youngest a boy of seven months. Aided By Children With the assistance of her children, she continued to run the farm, located about three miles south of here. She sold household products on the side, did substitute teaching, and raised a garden on the family lot. She says she felt that she could do better by the family by staying home and conserving what they could raise, than by getting a job away from home. All of her eight children were graduates of Kanab High School and all went on to higher education. Living children are Mrs. Roberta Spencer Hadley, Mrs. Persis Spencer Carling, Mrs. Vera Spencer Piercy, Cleon Homer Spencer, Loren John Spencer, Mrs. Lenora Spencer Fay, and Garth Morley Spencer. There are 19 grandchildren. SCS Engineer Loren is district soil conservation engineer in the Cedar City district and Garth is unit soil conservationist a t Duchesene County. Mrs. Spencer has been active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSants. All of her children have also been active in the Church, and all have been married in the Temple. She was born in Orderville, June 26, 1889. She has taught school in Orderville and Kanab. She married Mr. Spencer, stock-ma- n and farmer May 10, 1917, in the St. George Temple. Mrs. Spencer still finds time to raise a big flower garden. Every Christmas dozens of her friends receive gaily wrapped home popboxes of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Pratt of ped candied corn. At the dam, one of the two calocked bleways. using coil, will stretch 2,050 feet between two traveling towers located on opposite sides of the Colorado River. The second cableway span is 1,800 feet in length and will connect two shorter rowers, allowing the larger span to pass over the top. These cableways will carry loads up to 50 tons independently during construction of the dam. Work in any area at the dam site can be serviced by the hoisting mech-ansion either cableway. Fabrication of the four-inc- h locked coil cable will begin soon at the Wire Divisions Trenton Works as the cable is scheduled for delivery to the dam site in March. Errol Brown, and Lloyd Pugh and Preston Bunting were appointed as a committee 'to investigate the means of helping the Boxing Club. Lion Robert E. Bodvin, in charge of investigating and inviting Dean Bentley here, cited instances of seeing such a , community project undertaken in the state of Washington, and the great deal of good accomplished from same. Dean Bentley outlined to the Club the possiblities of the Ford Foundation sponsoring such a project here. B.
