goeas ires of coal valued at b 11 ons of dollars the ibric and horti cultural poss b 1 ties of amery ltv are seemingly almost is g gant what is now fn en nty was settled by the wh te race in the later Os when or ange seely tl en of mt pleasant sanpete count b t now of castle dale wag comm si boned by tl e author aties of the do mirant cl at that per od tl e task of th s then wild and barren w Ider nesa save for its and greasewood A small party of citizens of sanpete county ac compan ed mr seely across the mountains and others of that county rap adly followed for sanpete county ei en at that lay was con dered a well settled community and tl e water for rn gation purposes was cons dered bract cally all claimed the first settlements were nale in castle alley along the cottonwood ferron and muddy creeks this valley extends fro n pr ce at the north and on the denser eo grande ra broad through the 1 cart of tl e county to below the town of emery at the south a distance of about e gaty miles in width the county varies from a half bozen to th arty miles the altitude lai es from a to feet above sea lei el the cl mate is ideal for grain hay and large and small fru t and dairying is very plot bitable the settlers coming over from sanpete county were prejudiced against the country they came to settle for in sanpete county the land across tl e mounta ns was for years looked upon as only ap ng ground for the citizens of sanpete bointy it was only visited by some few of them when ind ans adventurous whites or members 0 the bobbers roost gang raided their sheep and cattle herds and drove the stock over the mountains and down into the valley below the reports brought back by the San peters concern ng the valley were such as to impress the people generally of sanpete county that emery county was a section that would ever remain outs de the pos b 1 ty of redempa tion hence they spoke of it with der s on and sneers WONDERFUL CHANGE OCCURS B it what a mighty result 1 as been gained the past two decades people who are e en well to do in ban pete county are now amon the mos ardent seekers of emery county land and for tl e past few years it 1 as not been the idle or the thriftless classes of the older county that have migrated to emery county b t it has been the more prosperous and ed bated fan 1 es that have gone across the mountains to the nty tl it is now regarded as already possess ng so of tl e finest public school bu id and e of tl e best rel g ous educational institutions to be found in the state outs dd of silt lake city and provo the day of appreciation of emery county s fertile soil its almost inexhaustible supply of water for ir negation and other purposes its fine el mite and 1 mit less opportunities has but fairly dawned an ong the twenty seven counties of the state emery stands sec ond in the number of acres now under irr gation being beaten only by cad e county the record being for cache and 2 for emery it is not claimed that th s vast acreage is annually irrigated and cul in emery county for it is a fact not creditable to the of emery county that there are num bers of i cry sh atless farmers some of the very worst on the globe son e farmers own as many as two three and four q arter sections of land nearly every acre of wh ch could be irrigated and tilled with water r gats held by the owners yet only a fraction of many of these large ind vidual land hold are put to any use and the land remains idle year after beir this 13 the on to the oft heard question why emery county with its thousands of acres of land un der on markets so 1 atle of staple crops an other reason is that for the past few 5 ears there has been so much team work connected with the new irnia t on entera rises in I 1 mery and carbon count es and at the old and newly estabi shed coal camps in both counties and the h gh wages pa d have been in cash at any t me they were demanded that many farmers with many teams and boys have been induced to engage in this sort of work preferring weekly paydays to waiting until fall for crop money many farmers have made much more than b g wages by s ib contracting but it must not be taken for granted that there are no good farmers n emery county for there of them and many of them are getting splendid turns for their labor in fact the men who have re ma ned at home and farmed have at the end of each year been able to show better bank balances than the men who have gone to the irrigating and mining camps with tl e teams and boys ALFALFA SEED IS KING wh ie ers fled farming ie generally profitable in castle valley and here let it be said that except i ader the spec al paragraphs relating to the green river section this article refers mostly to castle valley the crop de resistance is that of alfalfa seed corn may be the king crop of the nation but alfalfa seed re agns gns supreme in castle valley and why here is tl e story seed a twenty acre tract of land to alfalfa in the second year it is necessary to irrigate it but once or twice and you harvest from 60 to per acre from it such sums as the foregoing are now being taken from the alfalfa fields of castle valley where the threshing season is yet in full swing E and ten bishell of seed to the acre is being harvested and is abo it the average yield of this asplend d crop the seed we gs eighty to the bushel and bay ers are runn ng through the county with bank bo As pay ng from 12 to 13 cents a pound for it fastle valley s aution to the nat on s alfalfa seed crop th s year will be close to th arty carloads allow ng 30 pounds to the carload the farm value of the crop will be about some farmers have loafed about the towns whittling for half the summer and are now pocketing their 2000 and wads wh ie wearing happy smiles in a few more years this valley w 11 be annually marketing a m 11 on dol lars worth of alfalfa seed alone no wonder alfalfa hay is now selling it 13 per ton in emery county at the stack yard and some of the merchants are older ing cari of flour to be shipped in next month WHITE HONEY CANNOT BE EXCELLED then there is the famous water white honey of emery county of wl ch nearly every one in the state has heard it may be that its reputation abroad is greater than its on at home because most of the honey is sh aped east where the demand for it is far in excess of tl e supply when th s honey was arst shipped to kansas city and ch cago it created a sensation beca se of its delightful flavor and wherever it is kno there is a steady demand for it A sample of it took fiest prize at the ch cago world s fa r it is a crop that I 1 is easily gati ered therefore it is in h gh favor v th the average emery county farmer sev cral carloads are ann ally marketed the farm value being in the neighborhood of 51 cents per pound some 1 oney ra sers receive from 1000 to a year fron th s crop all of which is a clean p caup the bees do ng all the work but the extracting cann ng and haul ng to market the alfalfa and alov er blos are the ma n source from which the honey is gati ered these plants are in no wise inifred by what the bees extract fron them and the bees themselves render most val ab e service as pollen A bonev crop PRODUCING BELT emery county or castle valley will in t me be he sugar producing belt af utah to q ote L A of the state cultural college a man who has frequently vis ted the i county and who has told its citizens that their s was the beet so 1 in the state lie and other college professors have made thorough analysis of the so 1 observed the cl mate and other favorable conditions for beet growing bes des making ahem cal anah s s of sugar beets grown there and their verdict is altogether favorable to the county being an ideal place for several sugar factor es tie agricultural college men also hold emery county in high esteem as a dairying section but urge as a first step to success the shipping in of a better strain of dairy animals there are now three cream enes in the county and not one of them is operated by a practical creamery man and for this reason none are paying dividends about the state s average yield of oats barley hay and potatoes are obtained in this county wh ie the yield of wheat per acre is below that of several other counties corn may be raised without irnia tion LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY the county is also a livestock section the excellent range of manti national forest affords in the summer and the S abad and san fafael deserts in the winter makes the wool mutton cattle and horse raising industries extremely profitable local pride is thoroughly aroused toward the h gher grades of livestock flocks of thoroughbred alet sheep herds of hereford cattle pens of berkshire and poland china pigs colts sired by importe 1 and german coach stall ons are to be seen i every where fully a score of stallions have been shipped into the county the past three years and are owned by local syndicates the result is now shown in as fine a class of young horses as can be found any else in the state it is in emery county that john H seely of sanpete county ranges the greater portion of his fine classes of stock irrigation SYSTEM OF COUNTY the irrigation system of emery county cons sta of ten incorporated companies owning a few small reserve rs and miles of main canal the water being obtained from green price and san bazael rivers and the cottonwood huntington ferron and muddy creeks it is the best watered county in the state at present sufficient water is obtained to fill these canals with running streams almost to the r full carry ing capacity dunn the irrigation season with but oc cas onal recourse to storage water in the reservoirs except in three cases no attempts have been made to construct reservoirs of great capacity although at and near the heads of all the water sources are some of the best reservoir sites to be found any where three new mami noth land reclamation enterprises have been lately launched the oldest of these is the amery county land water company backed by minneapolis minn capital ats their tract embraces some aj acres of good land lying between and the town of emery that was torn ariy known as independent flat the work of construct ng the ma n canals and laterals and a system of s nail reservoirs is well under way and considerable acreage is now tinder cultivation another great enterprise is that of the P akhorn flat company under the direction of geoage II 11 isnow and james A melville of salt lake city wl are backed in this enterprise by chicago i en the r scheme contemplates the reclamation of about 20 acres of as good a quality of land as can be found between the missouri ner and the fie ocean huntington creek water will be brought to tl 13 tract and the cost of th s item alone is estimated at one quarter of a million dollars when uie mag influx ence of water is agn en to this land one of tl e most beautiful garden spots in utah will spring into 1 fe for akhorn flat possesses a loamy so 1 that in ty can scarcely be found elsewhere in utah the flat is protected from adverse winds by the shelter ing heights of cedar mountains and the seasons are thus lengthened at both ends so that t e late frosts of the spring and the early frosts of a are not to be feared in th a section another irrigation company has a blied for several thousands of acres of land in the ne I 1 of woodside and has also file water clams apon the anee river the early settle ent of these tracts |
