One of the biggest problems here is trying to make people understand how a newspaper operates. Actually we haven t tried in too many cases to educate" or promote an understandbills current and ing. We have been too busy trying to keep our week. each of kind a newspaper get out some educaMany times we have wondered about some kind of an to our it comes time tional reader program, but about this same mind that this County has never had a successful newspaper. We base this on our immediate knowledge of the past ten or fifteen years, and on occassions when we have checked back to the very beginning of the newspaper in this area and from looking over those issues we can see that the pickings have been lean". When we say that there has never been a successful newspaper here we ljase that statement on the fact that many have started and failed, and ownership of newspapers here has changed often. Local advertising support has been the reason for this in most cases. A newspaper cannot operate without ad vertising support, and a small newspaper cannot spend a lot o time trying to promote or help with local advertising unless the businesses who should, or will advertise, will take a little interest and cooperate and work on an advertisement for them selves. During the past few weeks we have had problems arise that prompts the above statements. Many readers, and we had one this week, feel that we should give them free publicity on bus! ness ventures because they subscribe. Today subscriptions do not pay for themselves. Twenty years ago this paper sole for $2 per year, today it sells for $3.50. In comparison, today we pay more than three times what we had to pay twenty years ago for newsprint and many other items are on the same leve By this rate of cost we should today charge at least $6.00 for a years subscription, or almost twice what it is today. When you ask us to give free publicity for a business venture without advertising or to some event that a charge is made for, dont blame us if we are unable to do so, just remember that at the present time that if we had to operate on what we gc3 in Kane County alone that we would not be able to put out more than one paper each month! These Items should go toward tax reduction. The federal government owns 200 billion dollars worth of private enterprise businesses that are not paying any taxes. It takes our tax dollars to keep them operating. These should be sold and applied to our public debt because they compete with private enterprises. Six to ten billions In taxes could be saved in this manner. The total budget for the federal government is 71 billion, 500 million dollars. The government has, at this time, unspent money totaling about 70 billion dollars that has already been appropriated but not spent. Fellow Americans, do you realize that the budget for federal, state and county governments amounts to 140 billion dollars for this fiscal year? This means that we are paying for government of all we make or collect. If you want to continue this way that Is your business, but unless you and I force a reduction In government expenditures It can mean only that. the dollar wilL be stretched until it is eventualy worth practically nothing, and then we will have a depression r far worse than ever occured In the history of the world. Please write to the President, and to your Congressmen and Senators today, demanding a cut in the budget and a cut In taxes. This is no time to be a politican. We need to be true Americans.
