Donald Esplin . subjects In this section of the country, was treating most of this area very favorably this week with a fine fail of snow and rain. The welcomed moisture adds encouragement to the many ranchers, farmers and everyone In general. These were the same words we used in a story on March 2, 1951 following the driest year in the history of this area, during 1950. Records kept by Gum-seBrown, and others, since 1895 showed 1950 to be the lowest on record with but 7.25 in. Orderville Reisdent during that year. y 1956 Lowers Record The year 1956 lowered that mark by about 2 inches, with but 5.43 inches recorded ' during all of 1956, and most of that coming at times when it was not of the most value, and. in such small amounts that no runoff or storage was gained. The storm starting Jan! 4th. and continuing through the 8th. has left 1.14 inches of moisture, and in the higher mountains fairly heavy snowfall has left from one to three feet Starting on the 4th with .02 of an Inch of rain and on the 5th with .47 of mostly snow. Then on the 6th we got .15, with .10 on the 7th and .40 Inches on the eight for the 1.14 inch total. The storm has been ideal for this parched country, with most of the slow falling rain soaking into the earth, and the snowfall being light enough that it was not detrimental to cattlemen with weak, poor, cattle on the ranges. Day and nights have been warm with a low of but-?degrees during our coldest nights, and a high of .56. Last years record low shows the following figures: Jam 2.10; Feb. .07; March none; April .68; May .25; June 1.40; July .05; August .16; Sept. .01; Oct 452; Nov. none; Dec. .09. total 5.43. 50 Years Record Going back to the beginning of records kept at the Kanab station we have: 1895 with 9.46; 1896 14.60; 97 7.28; No records until 1903 with 15.92; 04 8.61; 05 19.90 this is the second highest on record; 1912 15.26; 1913 Starts Third Session J. Donald Esplin of Orderville and Clendale, Kane County, took his seat in. the State Legislature for his third term Monday, but was replaced by a matter of months as the unofficial title of youngest legislator in the state. Mr Esplin at the age of 29 has held the distinction of being the youngest legislator for the past two terms. Still unmarried Mr. Esplin together with a brother operates a merchantile business in Glendale and has an interest in a cattle and sheep operation. His schooling consits of two years at Dixie College and for the past five years he has been working toward a degree in Law and Accounting from the University of Utah. Wives, widows, and employed women can draw benefits at age 62, rather than at 65, if otherwise entitled to benefits. This change is effective with the month of November 1956. For wives and women, who have their own social security credits, there is a reduction In the amount of the benefit if claimed before age of 65. The amount of the reduction depends on when she claims her benefits, that is: right at age 62 or at some other point between age 62 and 65. If a woman draws benefits before age 65, her benefits is not raised to full amount at age 65. There is no reduction In the amount of the benefit at age 62, for widows who file for benefits on the earnings record of their deceased husband. A representative of the Social Security Administration will be at the Courthouse in Kanab, Utah on January 17th at 10:00 a.m. EDITORIAL ; a JkefflmtR A good thing to remember Is that you cant save face if you lose your head! |
