It is then necessary to leave the scene of the fire to get an other load of water, or to take the truck to a hydrant or an irrigation ditch where it is used to pump water, through a hose, to the fire. At the last Fire Drill, all hose was checked and it was found that there was about a thousand feet of hose that Drillers Lceala Sculh Utah Well The second oil well has been given an established location in this area by Falcon Seaboard Drilling Co., and Valen Oil and Minerals Corp. for drilling a 3,000 foot Coconino formation test of the Leeds Structure in Washington County. DAILY TEMPERATURES situation cannot be placed on the present Fire Department, or City Council. They inherited it, along with a multitude of other headaches from someone who had inherited it from someone else. Any citizen, or city official who stops to think realizes that this situation must be corrected without delay. If Kanab is to grow and expand, this situation can only become worse. What should be done? More water mains and more hydrants should be installed and a bigger truck would help. These things would cost more than the city has to spend at the present time, but plans should be made to obtain them as quickly as possible. In the meantime, the Fire Department should have enough additional hose,,. to reach all areas within the City Limits. could be used between the fire and the source of water. A thousand feet of hose will reach a little over a block and a half. The inadequacy of the Departments fire fighting equipment is plainly shown on the above map. If water is pumped from a hydrant, and IF the firemen can lay the hose perfectly straight, and IF no trees, fences, or buildings get in the way, the area between the two parallel lines can be covered. The area outside the two parallel lines CANNOT be reached by the hose the department now has. Needless to say, there are homes within the two parallel lines that cannot be reached because the hose must be laid down the streets, around corners and other ob- structions,. A new court being built by the Pugh Corp. is going in down the lane south of Kanab, near the State weighing station, and will contain fifty units when completed. WALLACE F. BENNETT crease in borrowing authority of HHFA for college housing, and Says Ho Tax Raise For Hew Bond Issue When, on June 28, 1956 the Board of Education voted to call a bond election for the purpose of raising money to complete and Improve school facilities, members specified that the amortization schedule of the proposed issue should be such as to liquidate the debt as rapidly as possible without raising taxes for capital outlay (through bond interest and redemption) above the present levy. Taxpayers have expressed interest In knowing just how bonds amounting to $99,000 and Interest could be paid without a tax raise. The answer is simple: It will not be done by magic just by sound financial management. The mill levy will not be raised for these "purposes, and neither will it be lowered. For the past four years Kane school district has been engaged in a $900,000 school building. To date, the State of Utah has provided an approximate $649,000 of this amount. In order to qualify for these state funds the Kane school district was obligated to bond to full capacity; also to levy 10 mills for five years and to use 100 percent of the proceeds of such levy to redeem bonds and pay interest. It was optional with the board of education what bond payment schedule was selected after 1956. Beginning with the tax year 1957, redemptions and interest on the present issue of bonds can be met with an approximate levy.
