Show NewsBeat Davis County Clipper Thursday, October 21, 2004 jm Utah students will be helped by fluoridation of drinking water 'no' to fluoride A resounding caring moms will not forget a prescription, will not be an incomen ience for a responsible parent, and pills for the proper dosage can be had for a pittance. Ms. Becks proclamation that: We are safe. We are healthy" This, because of some three months of fluoride must seem far out, and strange news to even the most ardent fluoride supporter. Perhaps 99 percent of culinary water hits the sewer through machinery, appliances, etc. The other guess of one percent passes rapidly over some teeth, and then hits the sewer at regular intervals. The big winner is the sewer and big business. For any possible fluoride advantage, a rinse time should also be imposed. Personal hygiene is just that, and strictly a family matter. It is not, and must never be a community responsibility. Brushing is by far the most effective method to preserve the teeth. If this proposition fails, someone should then try to get that (brushing) on the ballot. That is an example of how outrageous this health voting process for another person is. It would be impossible to improve pure drinking water with any additive. Every citizen in Davis County (and on planet earth) has a right to that, if it is available. Infringing on the rights of others is well defined by Webster, and common sense. I urge those who agree with any part of this letter to get out and vote no on this very biased and discriminatory proposition. Editor: lie predictable proponent assessment of fluoride voting has arris ed. Ms. Beck states that the $4.3 million equipment is in place and "how foolish not to use it." The foolish part, and the monumental $4.3 mistake for the taxpayer, was Beck and Irvine getting the issue placed on the ballot in the first place. Since when is personal hvgiene, or any other medical needs to be voted upon? If there is but one person in Dais County that is, or could in any way, or at any time be adversely affected by fluoride, the rest of us do not, and must not have a voice in the matter. For me or anyone else to force his neighbor to drink water with a substance added that he opposes, and then sends him the bill, is at best appalling arrogance. "One size does not fit all." If this were true, fluoride pills would be over the counter. To mandate that the infant have the same dosage of any medication as an adult is ludicrous. The Grant Brough and Ms. Beck editorials have part of the answer: Ask your dcntist. This is a marvelous idea. Another idea, and that of perhaps all other responsible citizens is: If your dentist says yes, schedule an appointment, but do not have the audacity to even suggest that your neighbor wants, or needs the application at any time, or in any form. This application is even an option while in the chair. It will not be an option at the tap. Ms. Beck states that moms remembering, the inconvenience of a prescription, and the expense is the problem. If fluoride is that important, Editor: Many people are debating the issue of fluoridation in our community. For some it is a difficult issue, but as your State School member and as president of the National Association of State Boards of Education, I feel I should explain why I strongly support maintaining fluoridation of the county waters bv voting "yes" on this year's election. I believe wholeheartedly in water fluoridation. There is no finer program, for the money, in preventing dental caries, a widespread and costly disease. I would never recommend to any of my patients nor their children anything which would endanger their health. I know by personal experience the value and safety of this effective and inexpensive public health measure. Whitney B. Young, M.D. MPH Rosemary I. Young ty' dentures. As I write this article, I am scheduled to meet with the endodontist today. He will be working to eliminate the infection that has troubled a recent root canal. My own teeth have provided serious challenges. I can only wish that over 60 years when I was growing up, that water fluoridation existed. It may well have helped reduce my own personal problems. I urge the citizens of Davis County to consider these facts as they make their decision and ultimately vote on whether to support continuation of the newly started fluoridation program here. I urge a "yes" vote on the proposition. Kim Burninglutm Bountiful an Bountiful Upholsteiy Editor: all 6- - to Utah children had experienced dental caries and one in five children had untreated caries. As an educator, these are facts that 1 cannot evade.
