Under the proposal, the number of paramedic vehicles will jump from five to eight. BountifulSouth Davis will hae two will go units. from one to two units, and the Sheriff's Office will continue to operate four vehicles. But one aspect that was continually commented upon through the process was the cooperation between entities. Rather than starting or keeping turf wars going, the key players showed a spirit of "whats good for one is good for all." Indeed, after the years and years that Cache County and its cities have argued over ambulance service expansion and still not finally resoKed it is antaing how the issue and decisively this quickly complex issue has been decided. This issue isn't merely a matter of expanding the number of paramedic vehicles. It will likely mean formation of a whole new' South Davis district to coordinate fire and paramedic services. At the same time, the sheriff's office, which has staffed paramedics since the mid-1970- s, people, will go from one vehicle to two in its paramedic you agree new' will continue serv icing the central and north portions of the county, minus Layton. And Ixtv ton. with more than 62.000 fleet. The city managers of Bountiful and Diyton.in particular, expressed gratitude at how smoothly the negotiations have moved forward. Beyond that, they expressed a hope that similar cooperation can be forged w hen it comes to combining or coordinating other sen ices, from public works to dispatch sen ices. Indeed, even as the county's population grows, it becomes more intertwined in other wavs. Why should 15 cities and the county compete, all to provide the same service? Already, there is much cooperation: 14 cities belong to a county library system; aging services are provided through a county entity for all residents: animal control is handled now by one county entity. For 90 years, there has been one public school district. Why not consolidate in those areas w here it makes sense? Take public safety dispatch serv ice for an extreme example. To hav e 15 dispatch centers would be costly. confusing and possibly There are currently four. We are not advocating consolidating everything into one. But where it makes sense for cities to work together, for there to be few or one service rather than many, that seems to make a lot of sense. Let's hope this paramedic proposal can be the start of many similar positive efforts in the future.
