Show VaDaoGODSlipealiiffiS! 2 I I Davis County Cupper Students getting fiscally fit Davis County WOODS CROSS students learned how to get fiscally fit when Zions Bank officials visited their classrooms in honor of National Teach Children to Save Day, April 22. Zions Bank administrative assistant Sarah Maughan visited Woods Cross Elementary to teach Emily Mickelsen's kindergarten class the value of saving. She read Walt Disneys savings parable, The Grasshopper and the Ants to the students, then discussed the importance of using money wisely. Hundreds of other students learned the concepts of interest, budgeting and needs versus wants at other county elementary schools, including Heritage, Hills. Oak Bountiful, Knowlton, Meadow brook, Adelaide and Jennie P Stewart. According to a report by the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Finance released on BUS Dance Co. performing April 1, recently surveyed Utah high school seniors scored 48.8 percent on a personal finance quiz, lagging behind the national average of 52.3 percent. Davis County residents are asked to participate in the 12th annual Utah Letter Carriers Food Drive on Saturday, May 8. Those wishing to participate are asked to place a bag full of commercially canned or packaged foods by their mailbox on Saturday, before their letter carrier arrives. Food collected in Davis County will be distributed to local food pantries. The Letter Carriers Food Drive is one of the two largest single food drives of the year in Utah, and the largest nationwide. Last year the states letter carriers nationally collected nearly one million approxipounds of food mately 300,000 meals. Organizers say that since the food drive began, postal service employees have collected and delivered 587 million pounds of food to help feed Americas hungry. In 2003, the Utah State Senate passed SB 154, which requires all high school students to take a semester course on personal finance prior to graduation. This will take effect beginning with Utah's graduating class of 2008. A survey conducted by Teen Research Unlimited shows that teenagers spent $175 billion an average of $103 per week in 2003. The finding demonstrates the importance of financial literacy.
