Funny smells from vehicles should be checked out From time to time customers complain of funny smells from their vehicle. While the average car dnver usually cannot tell what the cause is, many technicians are very competent at discerning the different smells. Sometimes oil can dnp on an exhaust manifold or pipe, causing a very pungent, annoying odor, rather like burned toast. This can often be traced to a leaky valve cover gasket. If you have a leaky valve cover gasket, or notice oil spots on your driveway, or increase in oil consumption, it is possible that oil is leaking past the valve cover gasket. In these cases the gasket being replaced will usually clear up that smell. If you have replaced valve cover gaskets and still smell a sharp pungent or caustic odor, this can be a sign of overheated wires, which should not be ignored. A professional should inspect your wiring as ignoring overheated wires could lead to fires. An overheated automatic transmission or badly oxidized fluid that hasn't been changed can produce a burnt smell also. Have the transmission fluid checked, by inspecting the color. If the transmission fluid dipstick is dark brown or smells burnt, it is long overdue for a change. Rotten egg smells may mean your engine is running lean or that the catalytic converter could be malfunctioning. Some Ford vehicles have had problems with persistent rotten egg odors from converters and replacing the converter can cure the problem. Sometimes, oil can get spilled by technicians, during an oil change, and the smell. though alarming, is not a major concern. Usually the smell will go away after driving the vehicle a ways. Recommendation If you smell anything funny, have your car checked out by a reputable shop. There is a diflerence between a minor oil spill from an oil change vs. overheated wiring.
