Show CLIPPER TODAY THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1999 Smith's brings pharmacy to Sunset store 'drive-u- p' BY BOB MKXELSON Clipper Today StaffW'nter For the past three SUNSET weeks, prescription seekers at the Smith's Food and Drug store m Sunset hae been benefiting from a new concept that makes the process of getting prescriptions filled a lot easier and more com enient. The concept, known as the pharmacy, makes it possible for customers arming at the store, located at 2353 North Mam Street, to drop off and pick-u- p prescriptions all without leasing their car As Smiths representative Marsha Gilford described, literally its such a great idea you wonder why no one ever thought of it before. The Sunset store, and another in Heber. became the most recent of four Utah stores to have the service added. By Feb 1, two more Utah stores, one in Orem and another in Logan, will be remodeled to accommodate it. we expect to add "Company-widseven to rune stores m the next several months, added Gilford. Smith's currently operates 114 combination food and drug stores in eight western states, including 43 in Utah According to Gilford, Smith's first experiment with the idea was at its location in Las Cruces, New Mexico about six months ago. Response, she said, was tremendous. Some stores, because of their design, the fact theyre incorporated in a large shopping center, the placement of the pharmacy in the store or some other reason, cant be configured for a e, dm e-- s The Sunset store, for instance, didnt allow for the installawindow tion of a traditional dnve-u- p "Instead, the customer and the pharmacists see each other on small television screens and talk through speakers. Gilford said "Orders and prescnpUons are sent through pneumatic tubes hke at a bank Wherever possible, however, the company plans to add the service to all back-and-for- th This year alone, Americans are expected to have nearly three billion prescriptions filled at pharmacies icm OPEN 792 West Hillfield Rd. The average time between dropping off a prescnp-Uoand picking it up is the same as for someone going inside the store, approximately five to 10 minutes. The ideal situaUon would be for phone-i- n refills, explained Gilford. This gives the pharmacist several minutes to prepare the prescnpUon before the customer amves to pick it up It also works well for doctors phoning m from their offices. Then patients can then dnve over immediately and get their order. For people who dnve-u- p to drop off a prescnption, its a "two-ste- p process. After dropping it off, they can do something else for a while then return to get the prescription. "It's especially welcome by the elderly or people with children (particularly if the children are ill)' Gilford said. "Weve had many positive comments from elderly customers and young mothers.
