BARKER Clipper Toda Correspondent HILL AIR FORCE BASE -F- lving gets in your blood, said Kay Fckardt of Salt Lake Citv It only affects certain people but when it gets vou, it Uoesnt let go' Eckardt discussed his experiences flung classic M aircraft He spoke recently at the kerospace Museum Eckardt is a member of the Classic Jet Aircraft Association organized m 1989 A classic jet is a nulitarv surplus plane, both foreign and domestic The association has nearly 1.000 a n craft and more than 800 members v Most of the members are former mil-itar- They pertorm 330-34-0 air shows a year while the Blue Angels onlv fix about 60 shows a year According to Eckardt the purpose of the shows is the same to show off and to recruit I think the Classic Jets do a better of job recruiting than the Blue Angels do I ekardt said Eckardt has flown the Mig 21, the personnel Hawker Hunter and recently delivfrom Fort Wayne Indiana ered a to London Hus was a 16 hour flight Fckardt began his presentation with questions to the audience How of manv vou have read the Declaration ot Independence the Constitution the history of George Washington or Thomas Jefferson17 How mav of vou have been to Washington DC7" About half of the group raised t their hands kou are good the week of Thanksgiving to be Family Week This year Layton families that have been nominated as outstanding families by friends, families or are being honored for the fourth year Our nominations began about two months before Thanksgiving, said Steven Curtiss We notify people through and Layton the media newsletter among other ways that it is time to get their nominations in for their choice of the outstanding family in Layton The four categories of LAYTON'S FOUR 1999 Families of the family life are 1 Family with Monday evening Photo by Elsie M Hall younger children 2. Brad 1471 North 350 ages West, Tomshack, Layton was voted 1999's Family and Holly Beck, 1177 North 1360 with younger children winner East, Layton was voted 1999s Their nomination states Merlin Family with teenage children winhas served on the Crestview PTA ner Their nomination states Brad Board for the last three years He as the has served Health and Holly Beck have eight children Commissioner on the PTA Board and are grandparents to a six and has successfully conducted the month old The Becks are active in maturation program for fifth and the LDS church as well as the sixth grade boys for two years, and community Brad is a Soccer coach One daughter is a cheerleader at is active m the commumty working with the Scouting program for Layton High School Voted in as 1999's Family with many years adult children, Lowell and Shawna Ten (along with her husband) Johnson, 47 North 2200 West, is on the PTA Ways and Means committee spending many hours at Layton have nine children, six still school preparing and helping the living at home Their states nomination PTA m all types of activities Lowell and Shawna are commit Ten works with the reading "Myth 1 Jets are hard to fly The truth is jets are easy to fly After you learn a few basics, you can fly any jet We should be charging the pilots to fly them "Myth 2 Russian technology is primitive The truth is they build Migs for semceabilitv, not for looks or the latest gadgets Their planes are built for rough conditions in the field The Russians sav our are too high tech and liable to break down while Russian planes will keep going Eckardt spoke of problems with FAA regulations and restrictions He was told that the people who wnte the regulations have never been in a classic jet, (they were chosen for their writing expertise) and the guys making policy came from other government departments There are many wonderful inspectors that will work with you though, Eckardt said "Other countries are even more restrictive in their airspace The plane he flew to London was for a German who wouldn't be allowed to fly it in Germany We still have freedoms that most other countries have lost," Eckardt said I think if we try long enough and hard enough we can pass on a correct v alue sy stem with morals Ninety-nin- e percent of people eood F-1- ted to responsible involvement in the community as well as dedicated to their family They have taught their children the value of work through family endeavors like the substantial harvesting and selling of corn and other produce to large pnv ate markets Lowell has serv ed as an LDS Bishop for over five years and served in several Bishoprics and on the High Council Fie has been involved m Scouting programs for over 20 years Shawna has served as PTA president as well as PTA secretary She was at Layton Elementary Relief Society president in her ward for three years and Primary' President for two years Currently she teaches Sunday school and supports Lowell in his role as Bishop They both still have time for each of their children A visit to the Johnson home is always a festive Davis County motorists will see change in - 15 road work 1 BY MELINDA WILLIAMS Clipper Today Staff Writer Motorists traveling through south Davis County will see a major change m road construction emphasis over the next month as crews install a concrete banner and guardrail, leading to the opening of four lanes Staker Paving and Construction, the contractor for the North Initial Phase will take four to five weeks installing the barrier and guardrails between Pages Lane in Centerville and U S 89 Once that is completed, the northbound lanes will be stnped and four lanes opened For safety reasons, four lanes cannot be opened to traffic until the barrier and guardrail are m place The Utah of Department Transportation reports that fill, road i base preparation and pavmg continues in the southbound lanes through the same area Pavmg there is scheduled to be completed m a week or two South of Pages Lane work continues on the structures Traffic on local streets under the bridges may be affected North and southbound is to facilitate work activities traffic will be shifted to the outside of the interstate South of Pages Lane in Centerville, the lanes are for a short distance over each structure.
