All Saints Day is celebrated on Nov. 1, honoring all saints together, first to give thanks to God for the graces of his elect, secondly to give believers cause to imitate their virtues and third to implore the divine mercy through this multitude of intercessors, according to the book, Lives of the Saints, by the Rev. Alban Butler. The feast dates to the fourth century when groups of martyrs, and later other saints were honored on a common day in various localities. The day was introduced by Pope Boniface IY but Pope Gregory IV proclaimed Nov. 1 as the date of the observance in 1085, some say it was to counteract the evil influence of Halloween. November 1 was the day the Irish celebrated the feast. From Ireland, the date spread to England and the continent, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia. In many cultures, Halloween, All Saints Day and All Souls Day are linked in a three-da- y celebration. In the book The Catholic Vision, by Edward D. President Gordon B. Hinckley presided over the ceremony in which state and civil dignitaries, residents of Nauvoo and church members from local congregations attended. The original temple was built at great sacrifice by faithful Latter-da- y Saints living on what was then the American frontier in the early 1840s. When forced by religious persecution to flee Nauvoo in 1846, church members looked back lovingly and longingly upon their City Beautiful, with the temple rising high on a bluff above the Mississippi River. The temple had been the focal point of worship for those early saints who viewed the building as a sacred House of the Lord. Left unprotected, the temple was that St. Paul sometimes addresses all his readers, as saints, because they have been consecrated to God by baptism and sanctified by the presence of the Holy Spirit. However, O'Conner said, we ordinarily do not know for sure about any individual person, whether he is living in a state of grace or not. Because Catholics believe one may lose the state of grace by sinning, the Catholic Church has ordinarily reserved the term saint for those who have died and entered glory In Wales, people celebrated the eve of All Saints Day by telling fortunes, particularly those of young girls and boys. Then, on All Saints Day people paraded from surging and asking for soul cake in return for prayers. They felt keeping a soul cake in the home brought good fortune. While the Catholic Church has often been criticized for venerating the saints. O'Conner explains, The honor given to the saints is religious but not idolatrous. The virtues we honor in them are due to the grace of God, and are like palpable earthly reflections of the unspeakable holiness of the divinity Therefore," O'Conner continues, the veneration of the saints is ultimately referred to as God, and is of a different order from that paid to God ...In contemporary English, we speak of worshipping or adoring God, but we do not use such language of the saints. door-to-do- temple construction looted and partially destroyed by an arsonists torch in October, 1848. Weakened by fire, the remaining structure was essentially leveled by an 1850 tornado that left all but the west wall in ruins. In announcing the groundbreaking this past Easter, Hinckley told those gathered the temple will be a replica of that original structure. He said the building, will stand as a memorial to those who built the first such structure there on the banks of the Mississippi. Sunday he spoke of what was. and will be again. The gathering also heard from Elder Henry B. Eyring, of the Quorum bf the Twelve Apostles, and Elder Donald L. Staheli, a member of the Quorum of the Seventy, and a member of the North America Central Area Presidency. Music was provided by the Nauvoo Stake Choir. Nauvoo was once one of the largest cities in Illinois. Today there are about 1,200 residents, about 10 percent of those Mormon. Church officials say that for the Saints in nearly 1 1 million Latter-da- y the world today, the reconstructed temple will again serve as that sacred House of the Lord where families can be united for eternity. It will continue to serv e as a reminder of the sacrifice and hard work of those pioneering church members who, while m Nauvoo. built a beautiful temple, but strengthened the foundation of a faith that has become one of the fastest growing faiths in the world today.
