Show Lifestyles B1 From the Trenches B2 YouthEducation B3 Church Life B4 Television B6 Sports B7 Thursday, October 28, 1999 THE ARRIVAL OF SANTA, children singing and church choirs made last year's parades memorable for thousands of Davis County residents. Plans are to make this year's versions even better. The South Davis parade starts at 7 p.m., while the North Davis parade begins at 6 p.m. in Kaysville and at 7:15 in Clearfield. C Hope to see you in parade & San Diego Were looking for a few good musical groups! Incredible as it sounds, the Clipper and Clipper Today Electric Light Parades are only a few weeks away and weve discovered that the more singers and musicians . who participate, the better. , , When I first mentioned the Electric Light Parades 1 a few weeks ago, temperatures were still in the 90s and it seemed hard to even think that the Christmas sea-- I son was approaching. Now, daytime temperatures l have fallen 30 degrees or so, and we're only a little ;r more than a month away from our parades. p Weve already received a number of ! entries for this years , ;j parades, so were pleased with the public response. But weve noticed that several of the early entries ! have involved musical and we ve groups 3 received inquiries from V several more. , That leads us to believe that many of you .have heeded our earlier call for musical groups. It also leads us JLo believe I; that there may be many more of you out there who just need to be k coaxed into participating. We are, of course, looking for junior high school and high school bands to participate. We are also seek-- I ing school choirs, vocal groups and even student body officers of each school to get involved. Specifically, if you are involved in any music or that means that ' student officer capacity at Gearfield, Northridge, I Layton,Davis,Viewmont, Bountiful, Woods Cross and Mountain high schools youre on our list, But there are a lot of others wed like to encourage, p B1 ! There must be literally hun- yi Church choirs (sdreds of church, ward, stake and congregational choirs of all denominations in Davis County. If you sing in a kjgroup, were looking for you. I? ' Childrens groups Weve already had several )j performing groups sign up, so we know youre out there. If you are involved with teaching children to t --sing or dance, why not encourage them to perform in our parades so that the entire county can enjoy their .talents? Its fun and easy because no one needs to 6 march, just string lights on a large truck bed and load f j- - i- everybody up. Businesses and service organizations OK, so J; not every business is full of musical geniuses. But we ; still would encourage you to take part. Getting your it employees or members together to string lights and ;j staff a colorful float will add to everyones Christmas J: cheer. And if your people dont feel like singing. : recorded Christmas carols will do nicely Cities, police departments, fire departments ):JWed like every city in Davis County to consider i putting a float in the parade. If the adults are a little t hesitant, each citys youth council would be a natural Ij fit. Fire and police departments can transform their vehicles into works of art by stringing Christmas lights. an easy way to usher in the Christmas season in a .Its J; ; blaze of glory. ij. The parades take place on November 26 in Bountiful and on November 29 in Kaysville and Layton. J, er 295-695- The annual Gipper and Gipper Today Electric Light Parades are a little more than a month away. For years, the Gipper has sponsored the parade in Bountiful, and last year, the .event .expanded into North Davis with a parade in Kaysville and Layton. Both were hits, with in excess of 20,000 people gathering to watch the festivities in Davis County. More than 30 entries participated in each parade. This year, the Clipper and Clipper Today are encouraging businesses. schools, church choirs, service organizations, youth councils, performing groups, cities, police, fire departments and others to make the parades bigger and better than ever. The Bountiful parade kicks off at 7 p.m. on Main Street. Friday Nov. 26.' The North Davis parade will be in two segments: Kaysville at 6 p.m. and Gearfield at 7.15 p.m. The parade will be held in conjunction with Kaysvilles annual tree lighting ceremony and will terminate in Gearfield as part of a similar tree lighting ceremony and celebration of its new city hall. Complete route information for both the North Davis and South Davis parades will be published in later issues. Parade organizers are especially seeking the participation of bands, musical groups plus ward and church choirs of all denominations. Choirs and other musical groups need only rehearse sev eral familiar Chnstmas carols and travel aboard a large decorated flatbed truck. Business floats, youth councils, city councils, fire and police vehicles are all encouraged to participate to make and especially bright. the season merry To help those interested in preparing a float, here are several tips and ground rules: 1. We encourage you to bring along a fire extinguisher as a safety precaution due to the hot exhaust from the generators. 7 We encourage you to add some Ginstmas music to your float. Because the generators make noise, we encourage you to add a sound amplification system, whether you have live singers or will simply be playing recorded Ginstmas carols. 8. Do not throw candy from your float. Most cities prohibit this, and several of our parade entries will not participate where there is candy thrown due to possible damage to their vehicles. Candy thrown at people dunng a winter evening parade is especially hard, and it's also difficult to see. 9. Please do not confuse the children by putting a Santa Gaus on your entry. The last float of the parade will bring in Santa, as the purpose of the parade is to escort Santa safely into the Chnstmas season. Elves, reindeer, etc are fine, but Santas should not be included on your floats. 11).
