Show CEMENT IN construction OF THE FARM SCALES implement that no farmer can well get along without ard should be built in substantial manner by fred G miner now that a large corn crop Is pretty ell assured many farmers are cast ng about for something to weigh their rom this is right and a good pair of cales should be on every farm they should be put up substantially and it poss ble should be built so that loose hay or straw and stock of all kinds can be weighed writes fred G miner in farmers review for this the scales must be placed without a rover I 1 am giving a plan of the way we built our scales some years ago we arst d g a trench about two feet deep one had holes bored in it at just the right place to bolt the scale irons to it these angle irons were placed one at each corner I 1 they hold the bolts in place with the thread and down far enough to hold the scale irons our form was then continued eight inches higher and filled with con crete and the job was finished an opening had to be made tor the scale irons to come through the foundation this was done by using a board one halt by six inches and bending in such a manner in the form to allow tor this opening the scale platform was f V ov plan for cement foundation for scales we filled about halt full of gravel we then used cement with the gravel until we had reached about 18 inches above the ground we also made our apparatus at the same time when we had reached 18 inches high we leveled the same and instead of using wooden or steel ills we changed from the well traveled road of scale building and deemed to use cement sills our scales are bolted at each corner keep the bolts in place we had a wagon tire bent at right ang es at each corner and each placed the same as usual the wood sill that we replaced 1 the cement sill would have cost not less than ten dol lars it took ten dollars worth of ce ment for the entire job foundation sill and approaches we got the gravel for the hauling and I 1 and the hired man did the work we used the scales for everything and have weighed as as tour tons at a time the neighbors in rebuilding are using my plan and all like it it Is much cheaper than steel or wood and more durable |
