BY MARCI BISHOP Thunderbird Staff Writer The wait is over. After being out of oommission since April 24, all automared processing in the admissions, registrars, financial aid, housing, loan collections, and cashier's departments is scheduled to resume today. The project, under the direction of SUU Administrative Computing, upgraded existing software to betrer meet the needs of those who use the program, and the students they serve. Although the new programs will benefit students in the long run, SUU Registrar Maxine Stolk says that most students will not see an immediatr: differcnc.e. The largest benefits will be for those who use the programs. Easier sc:reeru, formats, and information tables designed specifically for each department will make the software more convenient to use. The largest system updated, the Registrar's Office, will also have more information readily available such as which classes require pre-requisitr: courses, and mon thorough class scheduling information. Stolk urges students to be understanding while computer operators become more familiar with the new programs. "For a while," she said, "things may be slower until we actually get into using (the new programs), so we're hoping the students will be patient with us." The 6.rst operating day of the new system is today, and it should be in full operation when registration for summer quarter begins on May 17. Senate discusses line items BY PAUL SMITH AND JASON NORTH of the ThunderbiTd Sraff Crammed into the Bryce Canyon Conference Room with a standing room only crowd, the SUUSA Senate reviewed several line items for campus organizations. The meeting was moved from the Zion A & B room where senate is usually held because the room was double booked. ·1 move we kill the janitors," motioned Michael Gentile, science senator, blaming the overbooking on the custndial staff. No one seconded his motion. The first item of business was the line item of the rodeo club. In dealing with the rodeo club, Gigi Wilson resorted to drawl in making a counrer proposal. MHow do ya'll feel if we do this?" she said, evoking laughter from the crowd. The senate tabled a proposal to cut the rodeo club line item from fifty to thirty cents pending an investigation into the matter. The senate also considered the line item of the SUU cheerleaders. Krystal Walker, education senator, who headed the investigation on the line item, proposed cutting it from 50 cents to 25 cents. ·rm sorry, but they really aren't that good.• she said in justifying the decrease. Walker was later chastised for not letting the cheerleaders know there would be a proposal to cut their funding and give them the opportunity to formulate a defense. The senate approved Wallcer's motion and cut the line item in half. The senate also tabled a motion to increase the Waukeenyans line item from 1 7.5 cents to 20 cents until May 19 when they could determine whether or not there are enough funds. A proposal to increase the music club line item was also tabled. The senate plans to review the student publications line item at the next meeting. Because publications has agency status, the senate must first vote to rescind that status before the next senate can make any budget changes. Line items are direct funding from student fees. Some organizations have agency status that prevents one senate from amending its line item. In order for agency status to be removed two consecutive senates must vor.e to rescind the status. last year's senate voted to rescind agency status for the rodeo club and srudent publications, and this senate would first have to vote to rescind before any changes in the funding could occur.
