The question of whether SUU will see an addition to its Srudent Center was addressed yesterday as student leaders and campus administrators discussed a plan to raise student fees by $84 over a two-year period. Administration officials outlined the history of the plan and explained to students where the plan is at this time. Pres. Gerald R. Sherratt detailed the history of what he called "one of the most unique and exciting" plans for a complex in the nation . Sherratt said that for the first phase, the Centrum, the university spearheaded the biggest private fundraising drive ever in southern Utah, and raised more than $1.5 million for the project. Soon after, state monies fell in Line. For Phase ll the administration hoped to raise another $1 million. So far, $2 million in private donations has been raised. The administration is asking the students to foot the remaining $4 million out of student fees. Sherratt said the reason the university has pushed for private monies is primarily because "to do these things through student fees alone would make ours out of sight." Sherratt said that Phase II will house an Iron Cou nty Convention Center, for which the county is donating $1 million. He said that the county will also chip in an additional $250,000 to make the proposed ballroom larger. Eddy Rawlings, an SU USA education senator, voiced concern about where the Technical Education Building on the site of the proposed center will go. Sherratt indicated that the automotive building will be tom down regardless of whether an expansion of the Srudent Center goes in or not. He said that the Plant Operations Building will be moved to the new buildings on the southwest.em end of campus and that the automotive facilities will be moved there as well. The tentative plan, which has not yet been approved by the SU USA Senate, the Board of Trustees or the Board of Regents, has srudent fees being hiked $7 each quarter through the end of the next spring quarter, then after that diere is no set plan. However, said Sherratt, "We don't want to give students the idea that we won't continue to raise fees the following year." Sherratt said to generate the requi red revenue the school could raise fees anywhere from $7-$14 each quarter fo r the next two year . There are no plans, once these fee hikes are approved, to reduce fees once Phase II is completed. Gigi Wil on, SUUSA education senator, expressed co ncern that while SUU is making this campus great fo r other things, including me Student Center, the university may be neglecting academics. Suzanne Pett, SUUSA science senator, said this meeting was fo r student leaders only, "to inform them as to the situation so when students ask they will have some idea." Brad Wilson, who lost in the race for SUUSA president to Jaso n White, was asked to leave the meeting. "He was then invited to return," said White. Questions were also raised as to what kind of businesses would be located in the food court of Phase II. "l would like to see the students decide that," aid Sherratt. The srudent government is currently conducting a survey to gauge student attitudes about Phase 1l and what services it should have. |
