Show PAGE 8 • TI-iE TI-iUNDERBI RD • SOUTHERN UfAH UNIVERSITY • MONDAY, MAY 3, 1993 SlJU' s Lord returns BY HEATHER ANDERSON Thunderbird Su,.ff Writer Sandy Lord, former SUUSA President, recently rerumed from a trip to Russia where she talked with people from different countries about the American Education System, including several talks about SUU and the srudent body. Twenty-five srudents representing various schools wanted to learn how to stan funning a student government. Lord talked with them about "a constirution, a structure of organization, and a mission." The conference in which Lord attended was held at the Minsk Llnguistics University in Minsk, Russia. She and two professors from a school in Oklahoma were the only people who represented the United States at the conference. Other countries present were Germany, Poland, Belgium and of course Russia (which is now included as part of the Common Wealth of Independent Stares, Russia being one of the 15 states). All of the countries repr ented had speaker talking about their education systems. Lord said, "l was the only rudent representative who spoke." She said one of the things that she learned is that there are "great differences" in all school systems. "Ours is much different than any other, we have a lot more opponunity and freedom ." She noticed this difference in the general public right when she stepped off the plane in Moscow on April 1st until she left on April 12th. She said she was "an1azed at the freedom we have." She says the Russian people have "so much to give." She was able to attend a few cultural events, and visit with people wiili the aid of interpreters. "They have such incredible talent," she said, "and their heritage is very deep." They' re also very smart, she said. A freshman in college to them is a junior to us, and "their English is perfect." The people have a very simple way of life and there's o many ofiliem. Lord mentioned she did have to stand in line once for a few food items. The thing iliat surprised her most, she said, was iliat one day she was able to buy two or three bags of oranges, and the very next day the oranges were all gone. Lord said that going to Russia was a once in a lifetime eJCperience, but that she hopes to repeat it someday. She thanks SUU for supplying tile money for the plane ride over there. She hopes everyone gets an opponunity to go there at least once and she says it'll be an "eJCperience you'll never forget."
