LETTERS Yu Ji benefits SU U art TO THE EDITOR; The following letter is to commend Professor Hong Yu Ji for teaching methods, time spent fo r teaching, and dedication to students wishing to benefit in the area of Fine Arts at SUU. Because he cares for h is students, his classes offer more than just a grade in art, but also a strong introduction for beginners as weH as a realistic futu re for students intending to compete in today's art world. Professor Yu Ji offers in his class a simple while challenging approach to drawing, painting, and print·making as well a a deeper look at techniques used by masters of the past and present art worlds. Also, snu::lents are invited to attend clearly presented demonstrations, offered on his own time, of techniques studied in class. Throughout the qua rter he presents specific responses dealing with each student's work for individual improvement of that work. Grading is based objectively on class participation, students' response tO class instruction and srudents understanding of the basic elements of the given medium . Grading scale and ystem are clearly defined at the beginning of each quarter. Organized critiques, in which students are encouraged to participate, are offered during and at the end of the quarter. These critiques are a strong tool for the learning process are very beneficial to the srudents. Critiques are the opportunity for students to reiterate verbally what they have learned visually throughout the class. Remarks deal with the work at hand and not with personal judgment. Professor Yu Ji offers honest, highly educated, and professional comments based on the fundamentals of class and those studied by masters for hundreds of 'years. Furthermore, outside of clas , Professor Yu Ji spend time and energy to organize model session , art clubs, slide shows, and lectures from local artists as well as acclaimed masters such as Jack Beal and Sigmund Ables. Such oppornmity is invaluable to an art srudent's education. Finally as an art major with an emphasis on painting, I have watched the painting class double in ize and the drawing class do nearly the same in the time of one year. Many students at SUU would like to express an appreciation for the teaching methods of Professor Hong Yu Ji. He is a benefit to suu. Joseph P. Voted Nicest Student Apartments in Cedar City * • 3 Bedroom / 2 Bath • Refrigerators, Garbage Disposal, Stoves, Dishwashers, M icrowaves • Box of Microwave popcorn • Individual Closets • Student Center • Study Rooms • Tennis Court • Walking Distance to Campus Only $405 per Quarter Recently a Convocation speaker remarked, "Look around you. l'm orry to tell you that the real world is not like it is here [in Cedar City!." How profound. Cedar City gratefully is not the "real world." It's relatively quiet and conservative. Does that offend you? I it wrong to have a community that revolves around the family and is safe and clean? No. It is the result of hard-working individuals with strong moral and spiritual convictions. This community does not deserve to be subjected to the "open-minded" individuals that have organ ized a d ub for homo- sexuals. legally, the university must accept the charter of this group. If you have been desen irized into accepting homosexuality as common and normal then picture sexual intercourse between two men in your mind. Does it seem normal now? How about two ladies performing oral sex? This new "club~ on campus should be a support group- offering counsel and professional help for these individuals. I believe that most SU students do not accept homosexuality nor want a homosexual "club" on their campus. Although SUU is being ~ politically correct," Let us recognize it for what it is. Dr. A.F.
