The win pushes the Thunderbirds to 12-10 on the season and now they head on a two-game road swing which will make stops at Nonhea.srem Illinois Monday night, and Wisconsin-Milwaukee again Wednesday night "I didn't play as many guys as I usually do, so we did get wore down a little bit," said SUU Head Coach Bill Evans. "Everybody that went into the ball game did a good job." Southern Utah jumped out to a 9-3 advantage in the opening three minutes and extended their lead to 11 points at 22-11 when Barton hit a jumper with 9:50 to go. UMW proved it was a good team by overcoming the 11-point deficit in the final 10 minutes to rake a 40-35 lead at the half. Andy Ward nailed a trey, Barton hit a layup and Kun Bailey's jumper tied the score at 42. AndJ Ward Both teams traded baskets in the final minutes with neither team gaining more than a four point margin. Things looked good for the Thunderbirds in the final minute and a half as they held a three-point advantage. Bailey had a chance to give the 'Birds a five-point cushion with a pair of foul shots, but couldn't convert UWM's Craig Greene tied the score with one of his four threes with 31 seconds left in regulation. SU U ran the clock down to 15 seconds and called a time out to set a play, but they couldn't get a good shot at the basket and the game went The 'Birds went on a 6-2 run to open OT and took. a 76-73 lead. Milwaukee answered with two buckets and tied the score at 76. Both reams traded threes to tie the score again at 80-80 and Barton's foul shot took the victory. Behind Sanon, Ward added 21 points, including five treys. Lewis, in the starting role for Curtis Loyd, netted 17 points. Amanie Niemann started the run with two foul shots, Becky Schofield followed with a lay up and foul, Price nails two charity tosses, Sue Shurtliff hit lay up and Niemann hit another pair of free throws before the Broncos hit their two. Cherri Shurtliff scored a bucket and drew a foul to pull the 'Birds within l l. However, in the last three minutes the 'Birds scored only three more points and the Broncos took the 101-89 win. "The first five minutes (of the game) were horrendous for us." said SUU Coach Larry Shunliff, "I think it was being the last game and they wanted to do so well.• Shunliff said that he was pleased with the way that his charges stayed in the game, especially in the last five minutes of the game. "Boise wa dragging a bit and we were trying to kick it and go. We did a good job of that." Behind Alvey's 21 points, Cherri Shurtliff scored 19 and pulled down 10 rebounds. Schofield netted l 7 points, and Niemann had 15. The lady 'Birds will have six days off before they embark on a three-game road trip beginning Feb. 24 at Northridge, Feb. 26 at Sac State and ends Feb. 27 at Nevada. Hardballers drop four to Pacific Tigers The SUU baseball team found rough sailing over the weekend as the Pacific Tigers took four straight from the Thunderbirds l 7-7, 18-5, 20-6 and 14-1 at Billy Haben Field in Stockton, Calif. In the opener Friday, SUU scored one run in the first and four in the second to rake a 5-4 lead after an inning and-a-half. The Tigers took control of the game by scoring three in the second, five in the founh, four in the sixth and a single run in the sixth, while the 'Birds added single runs in the founh and seventh. Offen ively, Cun Paxton went 3-4 with twO triples and four RBI. Lady 'Birds fall short IO 1-89 to BSU Seniors Angie Alvey and Llbby Price played in their final home game as lady Thunderbirds Thursday night. Unfonunately for the twosome, Boise State took a 101-89 victory. Alvey, a four-year player for the 'Bi rds, went out on a fine note by netting 21, including five threes and dished out seven a sists. Price had a off.night by scoring only seven points in her 25 minutes, but her day came Feb. 8 when she netted 31 points in SUU's win over CSUN. SU has five road games remai ning on its schedule and three of them are against teams that they have already beaten. So the 814 'Birds have a realistic chance of being in double figure in the win column before season's end. Against the Bmncos the lady 'Birds spotted the visiting team 14 points before scoring their first point over four minutes in the game. The lady Broncos scored eight more to close out a 22-1 run. ln the flurry the BSU hit five treys. Angie Al11e1 The Broncos continued to roll on with a front line consisting of three players at 6'3 or better. BSU led 55-32 at the half. Southern Utah didn't roll over and die. In game three Saturday, the Tigers touched up three SUU pitchers for 20 hits in scoring 20 runs in the 205 win. The Thunderbirds managed only five hits, but were able to score five runs. In the final game of the series, the Tigers swept the series with a 14-1 win Sunday afternoon. The Thunderbirds are now 1-12 o n the season .. SUU will now travel to Los Angeles to meet Loyola Marymount for a three game series Feb. 26-28.
