MS•Ufh ... - 'Birds to host Hornets, Matadors CLASSIFIED SUU mentor Evans hopes recent rest will make a difference in club After taking eight days off, the SUU men's basketball team will jump back into action wh~ it hosts the Sacramento State Hornets tonight and the Cal Scui: Northridge Matadors Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tip-offs in the Centrum. The break couldn't have come at a better time as the 7-8 Thunderbirds will be trying to retune their game after a two-game stretch through the Midwest which saw the ti:am commit a combined 68 turnovers in dropping games at Southeast Missouri State 91 -74, and Iowa State 91-63. Last season Southern Utah picked up three wins over these two schools. The Thunderbirds topped CSUS 79-73 in Sacramento, took two from CSUN 9076 and 89-75. For South.em Utah, Richard Barton us listed 39th in this week's top-50 NCAA scorers, was held under double-figures for the first time this season against Iowa Smte when he scored just nine points. He is still the Thunderbirds' leading scorer with an average of 20.l points per game. Barton is on a pa.ce this year which will put him in the SUU career top-10 in the three major statistical categories. He is currently fifth place on the scoring list with 1, 175 points, and needs 100 points to tie Skip Mead for second place all-rime. He needs 22 rebounds to become the sixth place to record over 500 rebounds in a career, and he needs just 14 assist to tie Rick Roberts for l 0th place on the assist list. Curtis Loyd, who has led the Thunderbirds in scoring for the last two ball games, is second with scoring with 12. 7 points per game. James lewis is third in scoring with 12 points. South.em Utah will finish up a its three-game home stand Feb. 6 when they battle Northeastern Illinois University. Tracksters to run at NAU Saturday Improving Southern Utah University men's and women's indoor track. teams will face rugged opposition Saturday at an invitational meet to be hosted by Northern Arizona University. "Only three teams are entered, but there will be some outsmnding indoor track athlen:s in the meet, n Eric Houle, SUU indoor track coach notes. "In addition to SUU and Northern Ariwna, Cal State Northridge will be competing. We know that NAU traditionally has an excellent indoor program-thanks partly to very good facilities-and we expect some good performers from Northridge." Both men's and women's ream members showed good improvement last week for SUU when the Thunderbirds competed at an unscored invitational hosted by Utah State University in Logan. "We were very pleased with tl1e progress we saw," Houle said. "Many of our people improved their time and distances, some of them had significantly better marks. The reams are going in the right direction." Phil Woolston trimmed nearly 20 seconds off his time from a week earlier in the mile, and he took 24 seconds off his 5000 meter time. Big improvement on the women's squad came from Stephanie Longmore in the 55 meter hurdles, Kristin Shaw and Llsa Hunziker in the mile, and Brenda Foy in the long jump. "Our attitude i.s good, and we are looking forward to the meet at Aagscafft Houle said.
