PETERSON Thunderbinl Scaff Writn- Jeff Ha lock, SUUSA's special projects <X>Ordinator, is loolring recycle. • By the end of this quamr rudents can c,cpect to sec recycling bins on campu ," he said. •we hope to how legislators th.at we are doing our part as well as taking a little pride in our environment,• said Hadlock, "No one will pa s laws 1 gislate rhc recycling of trash until someone small makes a little push. That's when it {recycling) really is going to get big." Hadl said that the Coca.COi.a company is ready to donate at lea.st ren 33 gallon drums formerly used to contain the syrup in malcing Colee. By cutting the top off, the drum n be converted into recycling bins to be disoibured around the more heavily populanxj pans of SU. Hadlock, who has been ricing on this project siocc last quarter, says that until the recycling ball starts to rolJ, SU is not looking to making money from the thousands of pounds of m:ydabl he hopes will wind up in the bin . "One big reason we don't stand to profit from this is that there are two recycling centl!:rs in Cedar City and they nly recycle metal. Our problem then is the tranS nation of the paper, glass and aluminum waste we collect. I know a Colorado State University the srudems protested that there weren't recycling ins on their campu by dumping thousands of pounds of gar ge on their qua . "At the end of on week they made about five thousand d liars from it. Of course they had I recycling placcs there to h ndle it" Hadlock said there are recycling agencies in t. George that would oonsider comj.ng pick up the collections, bu etlils are not yet nailed down. Hadloclc. also Ian to locate recycling bins on major wdcnt hou ing complexes. •viU~ Inn, College Ave., and · I believe Cedar West have aJl said th t they think iris a grca idea m have bins there." The reason for also placing the bins at apartment complexes is, Had\ says, •1 don't think srudents, at I very many, Id be willing to bring their recyclables to cam.pus. But r think many m re would be consc.iou of rccyding if it were made handy to them.'" As H dlock exp~ his CJ1thu iasm or the proces.s to begin, he aToo makes his concerns dear, "We are gonna get this thing going, bu it migh be a month from now. ·one thing we can't have i srudents throwing unrecydable trash into rhe recycling bins such a.s food, plastic, We want to encou~ the srudena to do it, but respect it.• |
