The era of flappers, gangsters and "speakeasies" is brought to the SUU stage Jan. 28 with the opening of the musical Chicago in the Randall L Jones Theatre. Directed by Fred Adams and choreographed by Roy Fitzell, Chicago is based on a sensational murder case that occurred in Chicago in the 1920s. The story is about Roxie Hatt, a chorus girl married to a mechanic, who shot a lover who jilted her. The story was originally brought to the Broadway stage by a reporter who covered the trial. In 1942 it was filmed as Raxie Hart with Ginger Rogers. In 1975, Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb produced a musical version for Broadway as Chicago. "I have loved this show ever since I first saw it in New York," Adams said. "It has some of the finest music to come out of New York City, and the cript is magically put together. It's literally a roaring musical about the 'Roaring Twenties,' done tongue-in<heek, with both silliness and style. It is a perfect showcase for the talents of SUU theatre students." Jennifer Minster stars as Roxie Hatt, with Gayle Staffanson as her vaudeville sidekick., Velma. Brian Vaughn co-snirs as BiUy Flynn, the fasttalking lawyer who hdps Roxie and Velma get away with murder. Anthony Backman plays Amos Han, and Stacy Nix is Mrs. Morton. Brian Baker is the musicaVvocal director for the play's 21 numbers. Scenic design is by Rebecca White and cosruming by Sandra Stiglinski. Chicago replaces Ol'Jfflpus on M'J Mind, which was originally scheduled. Tieken; for Ol'Jfflpu.s will be honored, no ticket exchanges need robe made.
