Show THE THUNDERBIRD • SOlJTI-IERN UTAH UNIVERSITI' • MONDAY, JANUARY 11 , 1993 • PAGE 5 CARTOONIST COMMENTARY BY BILL GALVAN The Unknown Superhero What are some of the names that come to mind when thinking of great comic strips? Dick Tracy, sure. Superman, of course. Batman, obviously. Thunderbircl...Who's Thunderbird?!?! Not that the name doesn't sound familiar to everyone on the SUU campus, but when it comes to superheros, ours is unknown. Perhaps you've seen the last three Thunderbird strips that have appeared semi-occasionally in this newspaper, and thought, who is this winged hero with the team's name and the perseverance to match? Who is this terminator-type villain, Raven, and does she always carry a bazooka? What's Thunderbird's secret identity? ls he a srudent at SUU? How does he fly? What's his favorite color? ALI very legitimate questions to be sure. To find out the answers to these questions, you'll just have to read the strip. (As if I would just give it all away right now!) But, I can tell you how I created Thunderbird. When I arrived at SUU several months ago, l just couldn't :shake the notion that "Thunderbird" would be a great name for a superhero. So, after reading about the legend of the Thunderbird in the SUUSA St'Udent Handbook and Planner, I decided to come up with the winged super-hero you see below this column. And the rest, as they say, is history. But a lot of that history hasn't been written yet That's where you come in (I'm speaking to the one percent of me campus population that acrually reads this cartoon.) If you've seen the strip and like it, let me know. If you don't like it, let me know. Your opinion is important to me and to Thunderbird, our winged yet sensitive friend. Send a letter to the cartoon editor, yours truly, care of The Thunderbird, located at TH 003. Now, on to the story below...Raven, the above-mentioned terrorist, had just robbed the City Bank of millions. Enter our hero, Thunderbird, who had raced to the scene only tO be shot from the sky. As our cartoon starts, Thunderbird is losing altitude fast and is about to have an intimate meeting with the pavement below...
